The legal fight between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni is not ending anytime soon. A last attempt to settle the case has failed, and now both sides are preparing to face each other in court. According to court updates from April 6, Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave spoke separately with both legal teams to see if they could reach an agreement and avoid a trial. That effort did not work.

Because no deal was made, the case is now set to move forward as planned. The trial is expected to begin on May 18. This comes just days after another major decision in the case. On April 2, Judge Lewis Liman dismissed most of Lively’s original claims.

Reports say that 10 out of the 13 allegations were thrown out. Some of those claims included accusations of sexual harassment, but the judge said they were dismissed due to legal and contract issues, not because they lacked seriousness.

What remains now is a more focused case. The trial will center on claims of retaliation and defamation. At the center of this is Lively’s accusation that Baldoni’s team tried to damage her reputation.

She claims there was a planned online effort to influence public opinion before their film was released. This is often called a smear campaign, and she has made it clear that this is now the main part of her case. The tension between the two actors has been clear for months.

Both sides have shared their positions through legal filings and public statements. On the same day as the failed settlement talks, Lively posted a message again showing where she stands.

She wrote, “I’ll never stop doing my part in fighting to expose the systems and people who seek to harm, shame, silence, and retaliate against victims.” She also told her followers not to get caught up in what she called a “digital soap opera.”

Efforts to settle this case have been going on for a long time. Reports say discussions started back in late 2024. There was even a meeting in Manhattan earlier this year, but nothing came from it.

Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, has already said in the past that attempts to reach a deal were “unsuccessful.” Now, with the trial date getting closer, it seems clear that both sides are ready to argue their case in front of a jury.

Outside of the courtroom, both Lively and Baldoni are still active in their careers. Their 2024 film together was a big success, but a follow-up movie based on Colleen Hoover’s next book does not seem likely right now. Reports say the ongoing conflict has made that difficult.

Instead, Universal Pictures is focusing on a different project based on Hoover’s book Reminders of Him. This shows how the situation between the two actors is affecting more than just their legal battle. For now, all attention is on the courtroom. With the trial set and no agreement in place, this long dispute is finally heading toward a public showdown.
