Blue Beetle Movie Filming Locations: Where Was It Filmed?

After James Gunn took over the helm for the future of the DCEU, we can expect a plethora of new characters to enter the mix. One that we already know will get a DCEU introduction is Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle. The movie is set to premiere on August 18, 2023, and the filming is already wrapped. But where was Blue Beetle filmed?

Most of the filming for Blue Beetle was done in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, precisely, in Decatur, Georgia, where Wilder Studios are located. Some filming was also done in Los Angeles, California (per the movie’s IMDb page), as well as El Paso, Texas, and Puerto Rico.

Seeing that Jaime Reyes is a Hispanic character, the locations absolutely make sense, and we can expect the movie to represent Latin American heritage beautifully. There’s more to unpack with this epic character and – hopefully – epic movie, so let’s dig right into all we know about Blue Beetle, its filming locations, and more.

Who is the Blue Beetle?

The Blue Beetle is a very well-known, popular character among DC comics fans. However, mainstream fans might be unfamiliar with Blue Beetle, as the character hasn’t appeared in many other forms of media outside of comic books. So, let’s go through a quick rundown of who the character is and what his powers are.

The Blue Beetle first appeared way back in 1939 in Mystery Men Comics #1. The first Blue Beetle was Dan Garret, who found an alien scarab-looking amulet that bonded with him as a host, giving Dan superhuman powers and the ability to transform into a blue, beetle-like humanoid with wings.

The second Blue Beetle was Ted Kord, a tech-savvy guy that didn’t really have superpowers outside of his technological brilliance. The third and current Blue Beetle – the one we’ll see in the movie – is called Jaime Reyes.

Jaime is a teenager from El Paso, Texas, with a Hispanic background, and is sort of an amalgamation of the first two Blue Beetles. He accidentally found Dan Garret’s scarab in a creek near his home and bonded with it, while Ted Kord served as his primary mentor.

We’ll see both Kord and Reyes in the movie, with Jaime donning the mantle at the moment, much like in the comics.

Blue Beetle (2023): A brief synopsis

The new Blue Beetle movie is still not out, and won’t be until August 2023, so not that much has been revealed about the plot.

We know that Jaime will find the alien beetle somewhere near his home and will gain superpowered armor from it, much like his comic book counterpart. We also know that we’ll get to see Conrad Carapax, one of Blue Beetle’s signature villains in the comics.

Also, Victoria Kord will appear in the movie. She is Ted Kord’s mother or wife in the film, and she’ll likely serve the purpose of the primary villain – it remains to be seen.

Interestingly, the movie was initially slated only for an HBO Max release but was later changed to a theatrical release on August 18, 2023. Xolo Mariduena will portray Jaime Reyes, joined by Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, Raoul Max Trujillo as Conrad Carapax, George Lopez as Uncle Rudy Reyes, and others.

Interestingly, Harvey Guillen (Guillermo from the What We Do in the Shadows series) has been announced to play a role in the film, but it still wasn’t disclosed which character he’ll play, so I’m guessing it’ll be a major reveal. Angel Manuel Soto is the director, while Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer took on the writing for the series.

Where was Blue Beetle filmed?

Blue Beetle was filmed in several locations across the Americas, with production wrapping on July 18, 2022. Let’s go over all the known locations for filming and talk about each of them in detail.

Decatur, Georgia

Decatur, Georgia, is a smaller town in the Atlanta metropolitan area. It’s actually where Wilder Studios is located, which is where most of the shooting for Blue Beetle took place. Naturally, a superhero movie requires a lot of CGI, and the best way to achieve that is by working in a great, modern studio. The principal photography started here on May 25, 2022.

El Paso, Texas

Seeing that Jaime Reyes is a character living in El Paso, Texas, naturally, some scenes for the movie were shot in the real-life town of El Paso. It’ll give the movie much more authenticity. Raoul Trujillo – the actor portraying Carapax – revealed that the shooting was nearly done in El Paso in early July 2022.

Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a Caribbean Island known for its breathtaking sandy beaches and for being an unincorporated territory of the United States. Due to the area’s natural beauty (and probably a lower price), most of the film was shot in Puerto Rico.

It’s unclear yet if it’ll have any significant implications on the plot or if it was simply a convenient option for the production. Filming in Puerto Rico ended on July 18, 2022, officially wrapping up the shooting for the movie.

Los Angeles, California

Lastly, the movie’s IMDb page suggests that at least some scenes were shot in Los Angeles, California. The plot will likely take Jaime Reyes there, but again, it’s unclear how much the plot revolves around LA and how much of it actually has with the location being convenient for filming – as it is with almost every other Hollywood movie.

Blue Beetle trailer & release date

Unfortunately for us fans, no official teasers or trailers are out yet, and likely won’t be out any time soon. There are some behind-the-scenes set videos on YouTube, but it’s important to note that they weren’t officially released by Warner Bros.

Blue Beetle is expected to be released on August 18, 2023. The initial release will be only in theaters and later on HBO Max after the theatrical run is over.
