Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Reunite in New ‘The Mummy’ Set Photos, and Fans Are Already Digging Up Theories
Few adventure franchises have inspired as much nostalgia as ‘The Mummy‘, and few have struggled as much to recapture the magic. After years of false starts, the long-awaited fourth film is finally in production, and fans have been waiting for the moment when its two leads appear together.
That wait has been longer than most. The original film arrived in 1999, and ‘The Mummy Returns’ followed in 2001, but Rachel Weisz sat out 2008’s ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’, where Maria Bello took over the role of Evelyn. A 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise then turned out to be a critical and financial disappointment.
Now the first photos of Weisz and Brendan Fraser on set together have surfaced. In the images, Weisz wears a deep red skirt suit with a belted jacket, while Fraser sports a brown jacket over a plaid shirt and jeans, and the pair share a smiling, affectionate moment. It is the first time fans have seen Rick and Evelyn O’Connell side by side since 2001.

Universal officially confirmed the film in February, with Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directing from a screenplay by David Coggeshall. Fraser is also an executive producer, and Sean Daniel, who has produced every film in the franchise, returns. Deadline reported at the time that the movie is a direct sequel to ‘The Mummy Returns’ rather than a reboot, which would effectively ignore the events of the third film.
The release date has also moved. The film was originally scheduled for May 19, 2028, but Universal has since moved it up to October 15, 2027. Plot details are still being kept under wraps.

The new images follow a first wave of set photos from late September. Weisz was photographed outside London’s British Museum in a mustard-yellow polka-dot skirt, brown jacket, wide-brimmed hat and leather gloves, holding a vintage briefcase and a transistor radio. Fraser, meanwhile, was seen on set in Suffolk behind the wheel of a vintage silver-and-red rocket car, in a sequence reportedly connected to 1957 speed trials.
Those details suggest a 1950s setting, which would place the story roughly 25 to 30 years after the first film’s 1920s adventure. Production reportedly began in August in London and Morocco, so more locations could be revealed soon.

The cast is also bringing back familiar faces. John Hannah, Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor are all returning, while Michael Johnston and Numan Acar have joined as new cast members. Fraser has teased that the movie will bring the original band back together and revisit locations connected to the earlier films.
There has been some confusion about this project, since another ‘Mummy’ film arrived earlier this year. ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’, from New Line, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, starred Jack Reynor and has no connection to the Universal franchise. Its marketing repeatedly stressed that Fraser was not in it, and it received mixed reviews while grossing $90.6 million worldwide on a $22 million budget.
That leaves the Fraser and Weisz film as the true continuation of the story fans grew up with. Both are Academy Award winners now, which adds extra prestige to a franchise that built its name on swashbuckling fun.
