Caitríona Balfe (47) Weighs In on the Best Jane Austen Boyfriend as ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Hits Theaters
Few debates are as durable as the one over who is the best Jane Austen boyfriend. Is it brooding Mr. Darcy, devoted Captain Wentworth, or one of the steadier gentlemen who often get overlooked? The question gets asked again with every new adaptation, and this fall it is back in a big way.
Georgia Oakley’s new film of ‘Sense and Sensibility‘ arrives in US theaters on October 16, after opening in the UK on September 25. It lands in a moment fans are calling an Austen renaissance, with a Netflix ‘Pride and Prejudice’ miniseries and a Christmas special of ‘The Other Bennet Sister’ also on the way. The film also marks the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth.
At the film’s Los Angeles premiere, TheWrap asked cast member Caitríona Balfe to settle the debate. The ‘Outlander’ star, who plays Mrs. Dashwood, weighed in with her choice in a short video interview on the red carpet. It is a fun moment from a press tour that has leaned heavily into the romance of the source material.

The Los Angeles premiere took place on October 7 at the United Artists Theatre. Balfe wore a custom grey gown, according to RTÉ, as part of a press tour in which each cast member has put their own spin on method dressing in honor of the story. The tour previously stopped at Dublin’s Stella Cinema in September.
Joining her on the carpet were Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Frank Dillane, Stacy Martin, Herbert Nordrum and Bethany Slater. The film is a co-production of Working Title and Focus Features, the team behind the 2005 ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and the 2020 ‘Emma’.
Edgar-Jones stars as the sensible Elinor Dashwood, with Creed-Miles as the sensitive Marianne. Balfe plays their widowed mother, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach plays the youngest sister, Margaret. The men in their lives include George MacKay as Edward Ferrars, Nordrum as Colonel Brandon and Dillane as the dashing John Willoughby, with Fiona Shaw as the meddlesome Mrs. Jennings.
The story follows the Dashwood women after their father dies and leaves his estate to a male relative, forcing them to move to a modest cottage. Diana Reid wrote the screenplay from Austen’s 1811 novel, and the film runs 132 minutes. It is Balfe’s first major role since ‘Outlander’ concluded earlier this year.
The film arrives 30 years after Ang Lee’s celebrated 1995 adaptation, which featured an Oscar-winning script by Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon. Cast members told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere that the new version is not trying to compete with that classic. Instead, it aims for a fresh look at the material.
TheWrap’s review called Oakley’s take enchanting, earthy and humorous, and noted that she finds more melancholy than usual beneath Austen’s wit. That perspective, which highlights the daily hardships facing women of the era, is part of what separates this version from earlier ones. It also gives the romantic storylines a different weight.

The beauty of the argument is that every Austen hero has a case. Darcy tends to win popularity contests, but Wentworth has his devotees thanks to his famous letter, and Colonel Brandon has long had a loyal following who say he outshines the story’s official hero. A literature scholar once argued that a lesser-known hero, Henry Tilney, deserves the crown for his wit and warmth.
‘Sense and Sensibility’ has a particularly interesting angle, since it offers 3 very different suitors in Edward, Brandon and Willoughby, with 2 of them genuinely worth rooting for. That makes it a natural conversation starter for a cast being asked to name their favorite. It also explains why the question keeps showing up at premieres.

For viewers, the choices this fall are plentiful. Netflix’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy, and ‘Sense and Sensibility’ brings a cast that includes several familiar faces from prestige television. Taken together, they offer a fresh chance to compare the heroes side by side.
For Balfe, the film is also a showcase of her range beyond the Scottish Highlands. Her portrayal of a loving, practical mother in Austen’s world offers a different kind of romance than she is best known for.
