Chun-Li has been kicking her way through video game history since ‘Street Fighter II’ in 1991, and fans have strong feelings about who gets to play her on the big screen. Past live-action versions came from Ming-Na Wen and Kristin Kreuk, so the bar for the new ‘Street Fighter’ movie is high.

That pressure now falls on Callina Liang, a Canadian actress who was relatively unknown to mainstream audiences when she was cast in June 2025. Her screen résumé before the role included Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Presence,’ which earned her breakout-star attention, and the 2024 ‘Bad Genius’ remake.

Now, with the movie nearly in theaters, Liang is making sure the press tour is as memorable as the character. She has shared new Instagram photos from the ‘Street Fighter’ press rounds, and they show her on a balcony in a striking red satin gown, set against elegant stone buildings and a bright blue sky.

The gown is gathered across the bodice and finished with a high scarf-style neckline. A keyhole cutout accented by a dangling beaded detail adds a daring touch, while the rest of her styling stays sleek and polished, with her hair swept back.

Red has become a theme for the tour. Just days earlier, on October 2, Liang posed in a courtyard surrounded by wrought-iron balconies wearing a glossy red satin halter top with a matching scarf tied at the neck, a color choice that felt like a playful nod to the film’s vibrant world.

The next day, she followed that with a lace look, a fitted corset-style halter bodice paired with an asymmetrical skirt finished with a floral lace hem. Before that, at the film’s London photocall, she wore an emerald Di Petsa La Davina Knit Long Dress with a deep neckline and a metallic chain centerpiece.

The campaign began with the global World Warrior Tour, which kicked off with a first preview on the Shinjuku Yunika Vision screens in Tokyo. Since then, the cast has moved through London and Los Angeles, with each stop producing a new round of images.

In Los Angeles, Liang was photographed beside a full display of Chun-Li’s signature blue costume. Earlier in the year, shortly after the trailer arrived, she wore a sleek black crop top with a grey blazer, matching trousers and a black leather belt.

All of it has helped keep her at the center of the conversation. Not everyone was immediately convinced when the cast was announced, with some fans calling it unexpected, but Liang’s Chun-Li has drawn especially strong reactions since then.

Liang has also won over fans with her preparation. She reportedly downloaded every version of ‘Street Fighter’ she could find and studied slow-motion footage of Chun-Li’s in-game moves frame by frame.

She has also revealed that she deliberately built up her thighs to play the role, a nod to the character’s famously powerful legs. Behind-the-scenes photos she posted show her in Chun-Li’s classic blue costume with the signature hair buns and spiked wrist cuffs, and another Instagram post shows her throwing kicks.

Set in 1993, the film follows estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters, played by Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo, who are pulled back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament. The cast also includes Jason Momoa as Blanka, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Roman Reigns as Akuma and Cody Rhodes as Guile.

Eric André, Vidyut Jammwal and Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson round out the ensemble, with Kitao Sakurai directing from a script he co-wrote with T. J. Fixman. Legendary Pictures and Capcom produced the film for Paramount Pictures.

‘Street Fighter’ arrives in theaters on October 16, including IMAX, 4DX and ScreenX showings, which leaves just 10 days of countdown. If Liang’s press looks are any hint, there will be more red carpets before then.
