‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Writer Responds to Critics: “If You Didn’t Enjoy It, Tell Me Why”

Captain America: Brave New World is the latest big movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It stars Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America and Thunderbolt Ross, played by Harrison Ford.
The film came out in February 2025 after being delayed due to the Hollywood strikes. While it made over $400 million at the box office, reactions have been mixed. Some fans and critics enjoyed the action and performances, while others felt the story was messy and the special effects looked unfinished.
The movie currently holds a “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes at 49%, but the audience score is much better sitting at a comfortable 79%.
Now the movie’s writer Rob Edwards decided to address the criticism. In an interview with WHO LET US OUT. Edwards decided to debunk several myths surrounding the movie and revealed that he wasn’t all that surprised by the reactions.
Edwards was asked how he dealt with criticism of the story, and he gave us the most honest answer possible.
“I think it was the same with Princess and the Frog, you know a lot of people are like well why do you need a black uh Saturday Live, we have one.” He explained. “That was the thing that kind of cracked me up is that so many comments were not about the movie….I’m like wait a minute did you like the movie or not?“
“You know sometimes it’s just about do you want to go to the movie, get some popcorn sit in the dark have a good time, leave, tell your friends, end of story.“
“As a writer you can only control some things, make an enjoyable film, and then you’re done […] so just yeah, enjoy the film, or don’t enjoy the film. You don’t enjoy the film? Tell me why I wanna know that as much as anything else,” he continued.
Edwards was also asked about the story changes. Even before the film’s release, rumors spread like wildfire online, claiming that the movie had undergone significant changes from the original script. There was also speculation that major reshoots had taken place, reportedly adding over $100 million to the overall budget.
Edwards said there’s a lot of “mythology” surrounding the film’s development, but in reality, it wasn’t all that different from other movies of its kind. He explained that Brave New World faced challenges like quarantine protocols and the SAG-AFTRA strike, but many people misunderstood the situation, making it seem more drastic than it actually was.
He also spoke briefly about Sam Wilson’s future in the MCU.
“I can’t really speak about it. I think that the guys at Marvel tell great stories and will continue to. They take it seriously and the films have fantastic characters and great artists. I think that you’re in good hands when you see the Marvel logo come up on screen.“
