The Boys surprised fans again with one of its wildest cameos yet during Season 5 Episode 7. This time, it was Samuel L. Jackson showing up as the voice of a furious hammerhead shark named Xander, and even Chace Crawford had no idea it was happening.

The latest episode of the hit Prime Video series pushed the story closer to its ending with a major character death and more chaos surrounding Homelander and The Seven. But one of the biggest talking points online quickly became the scene between The Deep and the angry shark threatening him in the water.

Crawford later admitted he was completely unaware Jackson was behind the voice while filming the scene.

“I had no idea. I’m just talking to a tennis ball the whole time, in a freezing cold lake … he steals the whole scene,” Crawford said.

Series creator Eric Kripke explained how the cameo came together. He said the team wanted someone with a unique and instantly recognizable voice for Xander, and Jackson was their first choice from the start.

“We wanted a really distinct voice and who has a more distinct voice in Hollywood than Sam Jackson?” Kripke said. “So we just went to his agent. He was our first choice, and we were like, Does he want to do this? It was really just taking a flyer. But then it came back, Oh yeah, he likes the show and totally, he’ll do it. Boy, that’s a bucket list moment, man, of Sam Jackson reading your dialogue.”

Fans quickly recognized Jackson’s voice as soon as Xander started yelling at The Deep. The short scene instantly became one of the most memorable moments of the season.

The moment also showed how far The Deep has fallen. After staying loyal to Homelander for so long, he has now lost support from both Vought and the sea creatures he once communicated with. In the episode, Xander warns him to stay away from the ocean forever, leaving the character completely isolated.

Some fans now believe this could push The Deep toward finally turning against Homelander before the series ends. After five seasons of bad decisions and failed loyalty, the character may finally have nowhere else to go.
