Chace Crawford Reveals Shocking Moment From ‘The Boys’ Pilot Wasn’t in the Original Script”
Chace Crawford has once spoken about a disturbing scene from The Boys Pilot episode involving his character The Deep and Starlight. The actor said the moment was not originally part of the script and was added later during production.
The information comes from an interview Crawford gave to Yahoo Lifestyle, where he explained how the decision was made to include the storyline after being brought in from the original comic books.
The moment happens shortly after Starlight joins the team. She is new, idealistic, and believes she is joining a group of real heroes. The Deep then isolates her and uses his position of power over her. He pressures her into a sexual act that she does not want. The scene shows sexual assault and is meant to be deeply uncomfortable to watch.
The purpose of this scene in the story is not to be action or entertainment. It is there to make something very clear early in the series: the superheroes are not heroes. They can abuse power, and the system around them protects them. It also sets up Starlight’s arc, where she goes from being hopeful and trusting to realizing how unsafe and corrupt the system really is.
For The Deep specifically, the scene defines his character as someone who feels entitled and uses his status without care for consent or consequences. Later in the series, this behavior becomes part of why he is treated as morally bankrupt within the story world.
Crawford said the production team approached him after the fact and told him the scene would be added, and that he would be the one to perform it.
“It wasn’t in the script initially,” Crawford said. He explained that the team told him they wanted to bring in a storyline from the comics and develop it on screen in the show.
He also said, “They kind of came to me and they were like, ‘We want to do this, and have this moment more for her character that’s in the comic books’.”
Crawford also spoke about how difficult the role was during filming. He said the character of The Deep does not see his actions as wrong and instead believes he is entitled and behaving normally within his world.
“For The Deep, this is a guy who’s extremely entitled and it feels like it’s just a rite of passage or just like a normal hazing technique. In his mind … like there’s no big deal with it,” he said.
He added that the timing of filming was uncomfortable for him, especially given the cultural moment around the Me Too movement.

Crawford also commented on another difficult moment for his character later in the series, where The Deep becomes the victim of sexual assault involving his gills. He simply described filming that moment as uncomfortable and unpleasant.
The show continues to explore extreme and controversial storylines across its seasons, often focusing on violence, power, and corruption inside the superhero world.
