Simone Ledward-Boseman recently shared a very personal story about her late husband, Chadwick Boseman, during an interview on the Today show. Speaking with Craig Melvin on March 20, she opened up about what life was really like behind the scenes while he was at the peak of his career.

A lot of people remember 2018 as the year Black Panther took over the world. For Simone, that same year holds deep emotional meaning. While talking about it, she became tearful and said, “It was a beautiful year.”

She explained that remembering the happy times can sometimes feel even heavier than thinking about the hard ones. At the time, Chadwick was being celebrated everywhere. Kids were dressing up as T’Challa, and communities were organizing trips to theaters so young people could see the film. Simone remembered how special that felt.

She said, “He was just so deserving of all the success, and kids were dressing up like him, and people are buying out theaters and taking school kids to watch this film, and he’s just being celebrated everywhere we go.”

What the public didn’t know was that something else was happening at the same time. Chadwick had been diagnosed with colon cancer back in 2016, and in 2018, he received a positive update about his health.

Simone shared that they were quietly celebrating that news while the world celebrated the movie. She said, “It did feel like, you know, they didn’t know we were celebrating that he had a clear scan, but we were celebrating that too. It felt like we got another chance.”

For a while, there was hope. But the illness came back the following year. Chadwick passed away in August 2020 after a long battle that he chose to keep completely private. Simone said that when he was first diagnosed, they truly believed he would get through it.

“I think when he was initially diagnosed, we both felt very sure that he would make it through,” she explained. They saw it as something he could overcome, even though it was scary.

She also spoke about why he never went public with his illness. For her, the focus should stay on how he lived and what he gave to others. “The fact that he wouldn’t let cancer get in the way of what he was here to do, let that be the lesson,” she said during the interview.

Even now, Chadwick Boseman’s impact is still strong. His role in Black Panther continues to mean a lot to fans, and his performance as T’Challa remains central to the Marvel story, even after the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. People are also still talking about his final work, including his role in the Disney+ series What If.

Simone has been spending her time continuing his legacy. She is involved with the Chadwick Boseman Foundation for the Arts, which supports students, including new scholarships at Howard University. She also speaks about colon cancer awareness and encourages early testing.

She ended on a quiet note, explaining that while the pain of losing him is still there, it has changed over time. It hasn’t disappeared, but it has become something she has learned to live with.
