Charlize Theron, 50, Opens Up About Teen Trauma After Father Was Fatally Shot by Her Mother
Charlize Theron has spoken again about a deeply traumatic event from her teenage years, sharing new details in an interview with The New York Times Magazine. The actress explained what happened the night her father was shot and killed by her mother in what she describes as self-defense.
Theron said the incident took place in South Africa in 1991 when she was 15. She explained that her father, Charles Theron, had been drinking heavily and became aggressive toward her and her mother, Gerda. The situation escalated after a moment of tension earlier that day involving a family visit.
According to Theron, the conflict started over something small that quickly turned serious because of her father’s reaction. She recalled that she rushed into a house to use the bathroom and did not stop to greet people, which upset him. She said cultural expectations around respect played a role in how he responded, but his anger grew out of control.
Later that night, the situation at home became more dangerous. Theron said she could sense something was wrong when her father returned. She described his arrival as aggressive and frightening, saying she immediately felt uneasy.
She told The New York Times Magazine, “I went into my room, I turned my lights off, and I was scared.” She added that she could tell from the way he drove in that something bad might happen.
Theron explained that her father forced his way into the home using gunfire. She said he shot through a metal door and made it clear he intended to harm them. Her mother responded by getting a firearm for protection.
Inside the house, Theron and her mother tried to block the bedroom door as the situation became more intense. Her father fired shots through the door, but neither of them were hit. She later described the moment as shocking, saying, “And this is the crazy thing: Not one bullet hit us.”
The confrontation continued as her father attempted to reach more weapons. During the struggle, her mother fired back in order to stop him. Theron said her mother acted to protect them when there was no other option left.
Theron has often spoken about this event in public interviews, saying she chooses to talk about it so others who have lived through similar situations do not feel alone. She believes many people experience domestic violence but do not always get support or recognition for it.
She also said, “These things are prevalent in a lot of homes. Women really get a very, very unfair shake.” She added that her mother’s actions were not taken seriously at the time, which reflects a larger problem in how such cases are treated.
Over the years, Theron has become an advocate for survivors of domestic violence. She has worked with humanitarian groups and supported campaigns aimed at providing help and resources to people in unsafe homes. She was also named a United Nations Messenger of Peace for her work in raising awareness about violence against women.
Looking back, Theron said she no longer feels controlled by the memory of that night. She stated clearly that she is not haunted by what happened and sees value in speaking about it openly so others understand they are not alone.
This is a very heavy and painful story, and it also shows how extreme family violence can become when there is no protection or intervention. It is also clear that speaking about it helped Theron process it and use her experience to support others who have gone through similar situations. At the same time, it raises difficult questions about domestic violence, safety, and how such cases are handled by society.
