‘Chicago Fire’ Recap: Season 14 Ended with Firehouse 51 Engulfed in Flames
Firehouse 51 never does a quiet season, and the latest run of ‘Chicago Fire‘ proved it again. The season ran from October 1, 2025 to May 13, 2026 across 21 episodes, and it was packed with departures, promotions, heartbreak and one very scary fire.
If you need a full season 14 recap before the next chapter, this one covers the major beats. It follows the premiere shake-ups, the final days of a fan favorite, and a finale that left almost the entire house in danger.
Season 14 Premiere Recap and the Fallout at Firehouse 51
The opener, titled “Kicking Down Doors,” began with Kidd and Severide learning she had lost the baby. It ended with their social worker Terry waiting outside 51 to tell them about a teen being removed from a group home with nowhere to go. It was a gut punch followed by a door cracking open.
On the job side, the season picked up after the CFD was hit with significant budget cuts that strained the firehouse. Mouch became a lieutenant, though Herrmann only reluctantly agreed to share his office. That small standoff set the tone for a season about who holds power inside 51.
The premiere also had to explain who was missing. Carver left and he and Violet were giving each other space to move on, while Damon transferred. The writers handled the cast exodus quickly so the story could move forward.
Vasquez Rubs Kidd the Wrong Way
Every new firefighter gets tested, and Sal Vasquez landed in Truck with a bang. He rubbed Kidd the wrong way by acting without waiting for orders, but Pascal told her he was not going anywhere. That friction became one of the season’s steady storylines.
The tension started at the very first meeting. Kidd told him he was replacing a hell of a good driver, and Vasquez shrugged and said Carver was not as good as him. It was a cocky entrance that set up a long fight for respect.
By the back half of the season, Vasquez had earned his place. One reviewer noted that he showed off his skills in episode 18 and might get an offer to switch back to CPD, which raised the question of where his loyalty lies now.
Ritter Exit Arrives With a Call From New York
Daniel Kyri’s departure was known before the season began. NBC had not revealed how Ritter would leave, which kept the door open for an emotional farewell. The premiere gave fans their first hint.

Ritter learned his ex boyfriend Dwayne had been shot on the job in New York and rushed to his hospital bedside. That gave the show room to build a move to New York that would stretch across the first few episodes. It was a gentle way to write out a character who had become a core member of the family.
The season did not slow down once he left. One critic felt the season struggled with inconsistent storytelling and the need to write out characters almost every episode, but still ended on a high note. That is a fair summary of a year defined by goodbyes.
Thee Finale Cliffhanger Leaves Nobody Safe
The second half returned with “A Man Possessed” on January 7, 2026, and it built toward a finale with real stakes. Severide had reported Hopkins and Captain Jean Williams for conduct unbecoming after a suspected watch theft during a fire. The remaining question was whether Severide would take over the Office of Fire Investigation.
The finale, “Thank You,” blended warmth with dread. Herrmann and Cindy renewed their vows, and Isaiah showed up in Chicago and announced he wanted to live with Severide and Stella. Chloe and Cruz also learned they are having twin girls, and a publisher approached Mouch about writing a romance novel.
Then the fire hit. Flames exploded from the building and engulfed Stella, Vasquez and Herrmann on the ladder while Severide, Cruz, Mouch and others were still inside. Miranda Rae Mayo described the moment in an exclusive interview with TV Insider by saying “We’re just engulfed in fire.”
It also marked the end of an era behind the scenes. The season was the last for showrunner Andrea Newman, with Victor Teran set to take over for the next one. With Stella, Vasquez, Herrmann and half of Truck trapped in that blaze, which firefighter do you think is hiding the biggest surprise when the smoke finally clears?
