The latest chapter of ‘Chicago P.D.‘ began with the Intelligence Unit disbanded and Voight working as a patrol sergeant, trying to bring the team back together while crime spiked across the city. The season ran for 21 episodes on NBC, from October 1, 2025 to May 13, 2026. It was a stretch packed with bombings, blackmail and one very personal mystery.

This ‘Chicago P.D.’ recap arrives at exactly the right moment. The next season debuts today, Wednesday, October 7, at 10:00 PM, following ‘Chicago Med’ and ‘Chicago Fire’. Here is what you need to remember before Voight and company walk back through the door.

‘Chicago P.D.’ Season Recap and Voight’s Road Back

The premiere, titled “Consequences,” found Voight staring out his window with a cup of coffee, while Platt urged him to talk with the commander about getting the unit back. The meeting did not go his way, and he was sent back to keep working Rapid Response. It was a bleak starting point for a man who is rarely shown as powerless.

The season soon spread its attention across the squad. The episode “Miami” centered on Kevin Atwater after a bomb ripped through downtown Chicago and killed executives of a major real estate firm. The case brought him back together with Officer Tasha Fox, an old friend from the police academy.

Dante Torres got his own share of the spotlight too. In “Send Me,” he was taken hostage and stumbled onto a shocking conspiracy. Over the past couple of years, the writers have leaned into his crisis of faith, giving the rookie real emotional weight.

The Intelligence Unit and a Blackmailer in the Shadows

The fall finale, “Impulse Control,” aired on November 12, 2025. It opened with Voight receiving yet another unsettling envelope from the shadowy blackmailer who had been tormenting him all season. That thread hung over the entire first half of the year.

The squad was investigating the murder of a man found dead in a neighborhood park, and Voight and Imani tracked down the former gardener of a mysterious businessman named Raymond Bell. The gardener claimed Raymond had cut off several of his fingers over a bag of mulch. It is the kind of detail that makes a villain feel properly unsettling.

Imani later got a late-night call from Raymond’s granddaughter with only heavy breathing on the line, so she broke into the Bell mansion to search for the girl. The episode ended before viewers learned what happened to Imani. Some fans wondered whether the blackmail was payback for Voight’s own blackmailing earlier in the season.

Imani’s Sister Storyline Takes Center Stage

Episode 20, “The Lost Years,” tackled one of the season’s dangling plot threads, which was Imani’s missing sister. One reviewer called the hour proof of how much a single character can improve a show. That praise says a lot about how quickly Arienne Mandi’s character has become central to the series.

In the finale, “Born or Made,” Imani finally comes face to face with the sister who was taken from her home as a child. One critic described it as a bold choice to build the season’s biggest episode around the show’s newest character. It paid off thanks to a devastating performance from Mandi.

The reunion was anything but warm. Shari had been brainwashed to protect her abuser, which led her to murder a sex worker and try to kill Imani. She then attempted to take her own life and ended up in a hospital bed. Imani’s official report blamed a man named Kirby for the attack on her.

The Finale’s Fallout and What Season 14 Could Bring

The episode closes with Imani asking Voight whether Shari will be charged with Laura Kerr’s murder, and Voight answers with his signature look that says she already knows. The two are left facing a hard choice about whether to bury the DNA evidence in order to protect Shari. That moral gray area is classic Voight territory.

In a conversation with TV Insider, showrunner Gwen Sigan and Mandi broke down the finale and teased the new season. The discussion pointed to emotional consequences for Imani’s state of mind, along with fallout through the job and for the whole team.

A separate interview with TVBrittanyF credited directors Victor Macias and Chad Saxton with handling the delicate relationship between the sisters so beautifully.

There is a chance the cliffhanger will not be picked up immediately. One reviewer noted that the new season could open with a time skip that leaves all of this in the past. If that happens, will Voight really let Shari walk, or does Imani have to decide whether loyalty to her sister is worth risking her badge?
