‘Children of Blood and Bone’ Finally Has a Trailer, and It Was Worth the Wait
Some book-to-screen adaptations feel inevitable from the moment the source material hits shelves, and Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling fantasy novel has been exactly that kind of project for years. Fans have waited since the book first topped bestseller lists to see its richly imagined world brought to life on the big screen.
That wait has included its fair share of turbulence behind the scenes, from a director change to a shift in which studio was overseeing the project entirely. Despite all that upheaval, the adaptation has finally reached a major milestone that fans have been anticipating for what feels like an eternity.
Paramount has officially released the first trailer for ‘Children of Blood and Bone‘, giving audiences their first real look at the sprawling, magic-infused world of Orïsha and the ensemble cast bringing it to life. The footage dropped alongside confirmation that the film will hit theaters on January 15, 2027.
Directed by ‘The Woman King’ filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood, the story follows Zélie Adebola, played by South African actress Thuso Mbedu in her feature debut, as she sets out to restore magic to a kingdom where it’s been violently suppressed. She’s joined by her brother Tzain, played by Tosin Cole, as the two form an unlikely alliance with Prince Inan and Princess Amari, the children of the kingdom’s ruthless ruler, King Saran.
The trailer opens with Lashana Lynch’s character Jumoke kneeling before a young Zélie in the desert sand, setting the tone for a story steeped in ancestral history and lost heritage. From there, the footage builds out a sprawling world populated by clans with distinct magical abilities, all operating under the shadow of Saran’s brutal, magic-suppressing reign, played with commanding menace by Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The ensemble cast reads like a who’s who of major Black British and American talent, with Damson Idris starring as Prince Inan and Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari alongside supporting turns from Cynthia Erivo, Regina King, Idris Elba, and Viola Davis. That kind of star power reflects just how much weight this adaptation carries, both as a major studio tentpole and as a long-awaited showcase for African-inspired fantasy storytelling on a blockbuster scale.
The film’s road to the screen has been a long and complicated one. Fox 2000 originally acquired the rights before the novel had even been published back in 2017, with Rick Famuyiwa briefly attached to direct in 2019 before Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox shuttered that unit entirely and shifted the project over to Lucasfilm. The adaptation has since landed at Paramount with Prince-Bythewood at the helm, co-writing the screenplay alongside Adeyemi herself.
Notably, Adeyemi has publicly distanced herself from aspects of the film’s development in recent years, adding another layer of scrutiny to how faithfully this adaptation ultimately captures the spirit of her original novel. Still, the trailer’s reception so far suggests fans are largely optimistic about what Prince-Bythewood and her cast have built.
At an exclusive trailer launch event in New York City, Prince-Bythewood and several cast members reportedly discussed the film’s massive scale and the months of physical training actors like Mbedu and Cole underwent to perform many of their own stunts. That level of commitment, paired with the trailer’s sweeping visuals, suggests Paramount is positioning this as a genuine tentpole event rather than a modest genre adaptation.
With over a year still to go before release, anticipation for ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ is only going to build from here.
