Chris Evans Reveals How “Precious” He Feels About Steve Rogers Ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Return

Few Marvel Cinematic Universe departures felt as final as Steve Rogers handing off his shield at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ For years, Chris Evans insisted that chapter of his career was closed for good, repeatedly shutting down speculation about any kind of comeback even as rumors persisted.

That resistance finally gave way once Robert Downey Jr. signed on to return as the villainous Doctor Doom, a development Evans has credited with changing his entire perspective on stepping back into the role. Making his way through the convention circuit this past summer, Evans has slowly opened up about what finally convinced him, and what fans can expect when Steve Rogers reappears on screen.

At Fan Expo Boston, held in his hometown, Evans spoke candidly about just how attached he remains to the character even years removed from playing him regularly. He explained that returning wasn’t something he was willing to do for just any reason, describing himself as deeply protective of what Steve Rogers represents within the larger Marvel ensemble.

“I guess it’s a never-say-never, but certainly not willing to just jump back in for anything because I think everyone here is precious with their role in the universe,” Evans said, reflecting on the years of pitches he turned down before finally agreeing to return.

That sense of attachment carries directly into what audiences can expect from Steve’s arc in ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Evans revealed that directors Joe and Anthony Russo have built a career out of testing the character physically and emotionally, and this film continues that tradition in especially punishing fashion. “The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers,” Evans said. “Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who never gets punched, but someone who gets punched so many times, but still gets up.”

Evans has been clear that his decision to come back wasn’t a casual one. He’s described fielding at least a dozen different pitches from Marvel in the years since ‘Endgame,’ none of which felt right until Downey’s casting and a specific pitch from Joe Russo finally convinced him the timing made sense.

That deliberateness extends to how Evans talks about the character’s evolution across his eleven films in the role. Speaking about what he understands about Steve now that he didn’t when he first took the part, Evans explained that early on, the focus was on representing why Rogers was chosen as a hero, while later performances leaned into showing his mistakes and confusion rather than unwavering conviction, calling that shift far more interesting to portray.

Evans has confirmed his involvement won’t end with ‘Doomsday’ either, revealing plans to appear in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as well once that film begins production. With Steve Rogers now confirmed to be a father following the events shown in early trailer footage, exactly how his storyline unfolds across both films remains one of the more tightly guarded secrets heading into Marvel’s next major chapter.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters December 18, bringing Evans back alongside a cast that includes Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and dozens of other returning MCU stars.
