Christian Bale Opens Up About a Career Decision He Regrets
Christian Bale is known for taking big risks and fully committing to every role he plays. Over the years, that approach has led to some unforgettable performances. Still, even with a career full of praise and awards, there is one movie he openly regrets being part of.
That movie is Terminator Salvation, released in 2009. Bale has spoken about it more than once, most recently during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. While discussing his career, he admitted that the film remains a sore spot for him.
Before signing on, Bale said he was not interested in the project at all. In fact, he turned it down several times. I said no three times, Bale said. I went, ‘Nah, there’s no story there.’
He explained that he had seen and enjoyed the first two Terminator films, but felt the story had already been told. I’d seen the first one and enjoyed that back in England; I’d been to the movies and seen the second one, he said.
Despite his doubts, Bale eventually agreed to play John Connor. Part of the problem, he explained, was that the film ran into trouble before it even started shooting. The writers’ strike disrupted the script, and the story never fully came together. It’s a great thorn in my side because I wish we could have reinvigorated it, Bale said. And unfortunately, during production, you could tell that wasn’t happening. It’s a great shame.
Bale also admitted that stubbornness played a role in his decision. When people around him warned that taking the role would be a bad move, it made him want to do it anyway.
There’s a perverse side to me, he said. When people were telling me that there’s no way on God’s Earth that I should take that role, and I was thinking the same thing… when people started verbalizing that to me, I started to go, ‘Oh really? All right, well, watch this then.’
The movie is also remembered for a separate incident that still follows Bale today. During filming, audio leaked of him yelling at a crew member after being distracted during an intense scene. Bale has since said he deeply regrets that moment.
Great learning lesson for me, he said about the outburst. No matter how much you lose yourself in a scene, you do not allow yourself to behave that way. And yeah, of course, I’ve got enormous regrets about it.
Now in 2026, Bale’s career looks very different. He has moved toward bold, director-driven projects and continues his work outside of acting as well. His next film, The Bride!, is set to release on March 6, 2026. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the movie places Bale in the role of Frankenstein’s monster in a reimagined 1930s Chicago.
Later in the year, he will appear in Madden, a biographical sports film directed by David O. Russell. The movie, coming to Prime Video in November 2026, stars Nicolas Cage as John Madden, with Bale playing the powerful NFL executive Al Davis.
Do you agree with Bale’s view on Terminator Salvation, or do you think the film deserves more credit?
