Christopher Nolan is addressing comparisons between Agamemnon’s armor in The Odyssey and the look of the Batman Batsuit, explaining that the design choices come from historical research and character storytelling rather than superhero inspiration.

Speaking in an interview with TIME, Nolan explained that the film’s costume design is based on real materials and techniques that could plausibly exist in the Bronze Age setting. He pointed to ancient weapons as a reference point for the visual style.

“There are Mycenaean daggers that are blackened bronze. The theory is they probably could have blackened bronze in those days. You take bronze, you add more gold and silver to it and then use sulfur,” Nolan said.

He explained that Agamemnon’s armor was designed to show status and power in a very direct way. The costume team, led by designer Ellen Mirojnick, focused on making him look more elevated than other characters through rare and expensive-looking materials.

“With Agamemnon, Ellen [Mirojnick], our costume designer, is trying to communicate how elevated he is relative to everyone else. You do that through materials that would be very expensive,” he added.

Some viewers had noticed similarities between the dark, polished look of the armor and the visual style of the Batman Batsuit from Nolan’s earlier films. However, Nolan’s explanation makes it clear the intention was rooted in historical interpretation rather than repeating superhero design language.

The Odyssey is an upcoming epic film written and directed by Christopher Nolan and based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem. The story follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he tries to return home after the Trojan War. The cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.

The film is being produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas through Syncopy and is described as a large-scale historical adaptation with a realistic approach to Greek mythology. Nolan has said he drew inspiration from classical translations and earlier cinematic interpretations of mythic stories.

Filming took place across multiple countries, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Malta. The production used IMAX 70mm cameras throughout, making it one of Nolan’s most technically ambitious projects to date.

According to studio information reported by TIME, the film is set for theatrical release on July 17, in the United States.
