Christopher Nolan Says This Film Has the Most Unique Ending of His Career
Christopher Nolan has always said that the ending of a movie matters just as much as the opening scene. In a recent interview with Insider, the director explained that he cannot really begin a film until he knows exactly how it will end. For him, the final moments are not something you figure out later. They come first.
Nolan told Insider that choosing a single favorite ending from his work is almost impossible. Each film means something different to him, and each ending is tied to a long creative process. He said he needs to understand where the story is going before he can fully commit to making the movie.
His 2023 film Oppenheimer shows how much weight he puts on the final scenes. The movie ends with a quiet but heavy conversation between J. Robert Oppenheimer and Albert Einstein. Nolan wanted that moment to make it clear that the world was changed forever by the creation of the atomic bomb. The ending is calm on the surface but carries a lot of fear and regret underneath.
Still, when Nolan talks about an ending that stands out as truly special, he often brings up Inception. According to Insider, he described the final spinning top scene as a very unique experience, especially when watching it with a large audience. He said he used to sneak into the back of theaters just to feel the reaction in the room.
He remembered hearing people gasp or groan when the screen suddenly went black. Nolan joked that I’d feel like I needed to get out of here before anybody notices I’m there, because the crowd was so loud and emotional. For him, that shared moment of confusion and debate made the ending unforgettable.
Nolan also made it clear that these moments are carefully planned. He does not stumble into endings by accident. Before writing a script, he spends months thinking, writing notes, and shaping the final destination. He said that until he knows where the story ends, he cannot give the project everything he has.
Right now, Nolan is deep into work on his next film, The Odyssey. The project is based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer and marks his move into large-scale fantasy. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with a cast that also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson.
The film reportedly cost around $250 million and was shot in locations like Morocco and Italy using new IMAX camera technology. The movie is one of the biggest productions Nolan has ever taken on.
Outside of filmmaking, Nolan has also stepped into a major leadership role as president of the Directors Guild of America. He has spoken out about the risks of using artificial intelligence in films and has pushed hard to protect creative control for directors.
He has also been vocal about keeping movie theaters alive and making sure films are still seen on the biggest screens possible. The Odyssey is set to hit theaters on July 17 and is already generating huge buzz. Whether it reaches the same heights as his sci-fi and historical films remains to be seen.
