Christopher Nolan’s No-Uggs Rule Just Got Even More Ridiculous Thanks To Emily Blunt And Anne Hathaway
Christopher Nolan has built a reputation for demanding total immersion on his sets, from banning phones to reportedly nixing chairs near the monitors. But it turns out the director draws his firmest line somewhere much cozier, and it has nothing to do with cameras or crew.
The filmmaker’s newest release, ‘The Odyssey,’ brought together a massive ensemble cast including Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, and Lupita Nyong’o, and it seems the group also got a crash course in Nolan’s quirks. Hathaway and Damon revealed during an appearance on Brittany Broski’s Royal Court that Nolan has a strict “no Uggs” policy on set, with Damon suggesting the boots symbolize a kind of leisure the director just isn’t comfortable with.
Nolan himself confirmed the rule was very real. Speaking on CBS Mornings, he explained that certain things remind actors they’re in the real world instead of the one being built for them, and that he wants performers to stay in the moment. He went a step further, admitting that Ugg boots specifically represent something he can’t get past. He called the boots a “signifier of modernity,” acknowledging the whole idea is a little absurd while still standing firmly behind the ban.
This isn’t a new habit for the ‘Oppenheimer’ director. Anne Hathaway has previously admitted she showed up to set in Uggs once, only for Nolan to look down, say “Nope,” and never see them again. Emily Blunt shared a similar story during an appearance on The Late Show, describing the moment as feeling like a scene straight out of ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ recalling that Nolan simply stared at her boots until she took them off.
What makes the whole thing funnier is that Nolan doesn’t actually hate the shoes themselves, just their presence on his sets. Blunt has said that after wrapping ‘Oppenheimer,’ where she’d worn the boots on set, she gifted Nolan a pair of Ugg slippers as a wrap gift, joking about his well known aversion to them.
The story has picked up steam online largely because it fits so neatly into the mythology already built around Nolan’s sets, where phones, chairs, and now cozy footwear are treated as threats to cinematic realism. For a filmmaker famous for building entire worlds from the ground up, it turns out the biggest disruption to the illusion might just be a warm, fuzzy pair of slippers.
