Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Could Become the Highest-Grossing R-Rated Film Ever

Christopher Nolan has built a career on ambitious, large-scale filmmaking, but even by his own standards, ‘The Odyssey’ is proving to be an unprecedented box office phenomenon. Adapted from Homer’s ancient epic and shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras with a reported $250 million budget, the film has already become Nolan’s most expensive production and one of his most technically demanding undertakings to date.

Since its July 17 release, the film has defied typical expectations for an R-rated, nearly three-hour sword-and-sandal epic, posting the biggest opening weekend ever for a non-franchised R-rated movie. That momentum carried through its subsequent weekends as well, with the film dropping just 30 percent in its second frame, a notably smaller decline than Nolan’s previous release, ‘Oppenheimer,’ experienced at the same stage.

That consistency has now pushed ‘The Odyssey’ past a milestone few expected from an adaptation of ancient Greek poetry. Having already crossed $1.1 billion worldwide to become Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, surpassing ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ at $1.085 billion, current projections suggest the film could finish its theatrical run anywhere between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion globally, putting it within reach of overtaking ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ $1.338 billion as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

That would mark a remarkable achievement for a film built around one of literature’s oldest stories, especially given that ‘The Odyssey’ hasn’t even opened yet in China, the world’s second-largest moviegoing market, leaving additional box office runway still ahead. With IMAX screenings selling out weeks in advance and demand showing no signs of slowing, the film’s path toward that record appears increasingly plausible with each passing weekend.

Beyond breaking Nolan’s own personal box office record, ‘The Odyssey’ has become the highest-grossing film in the careers of stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson globally. The film’s ensemble cast, which also includes Tom Holland and Zendaya, has helped drive both critical acclaim and audience turnout, with the movie tying the record for Nolan’s highest Rotten Tomatoes score alongside ‘Memento’ and ‘The Dark Knight,’ backed by a record 97 percent audience approval score.

IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond addressed the film’s cultural reach directly, describing ‘The Odyssey’ as having crossed over from a hit blockbuster into a genuine global cultural event. That sentiment reflects just how significant the film’s IMAX performance has been, with the format already contributing hundreds of millions of dollars to its overall global total.

Despite its historic run, ‘The Odyssey’ hasn’t had the summer box office entirely to itself. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ also starring Holland and Zendaya, has emerged as 2026’s highest-grossing film overall, occasionally overshadowing ‘The Odyssey’ in weekly box office charts even as both films continue performing exceptionally well simultaneously.

Together, the two films have already combined for more than $2.1 billion at the global box office, a figure that’s quickly closing in on the $2.4 billion combined haul of 2023’s “Barbenheimer” phenomenon. With ‘The Odyssey’ continuing to hold strong theatrical demand and its highly anticipated China release still ahead on August 14, the film’s final tally could climb even further before its run concludes.
