Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Crosses $1 Billion, His First Since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Christopher Nolan has spent decades proving he can turn even the most unconventional premises into box office gold, but even by his standards, this particular achievement carries extra weight. Adapting a nearly 3,000-year-old Greek epic poem into an R-rated, three-hour theatrical release isn’t exactly the kind of pitch that screams guaranteed commercial success.

Yet ‘The Odyssey’ has spent its entire theatrical run defying those expectations at nearly every turn, riding a wave of critical acclaim and staggering audience demand that’s kept it dominating box office charts well into its fourth weekend. Even with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ now stealing most of the daily headlines, Nolan’s Greek epic has quietly kept climbing toward one of the industry’s most exclusive milestones.

That climb has now paid off. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ has officially surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, marking Nolan’s third film to ever cross the billion-dollar threshold and his first since ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ back in 2012.

That gap matters given just how rare this level of success has been for Nolan throughout his career, even accounting for his reputation as one of the industry’s most reliably bankable directors. His previous film, 2023’s Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer,’ came remarkably close to the billion-dollar mark but ultimately fell short, making this milestone an even more significant benchmark for a filmmaker whose brand alone has become a genuine box office draw.

The achievement is especially notable given the film’s R rating. ‘The Odyssey’ is set to become just the third R-rated movie in history to reach $1 billion globally, joining an exclusive club that currently includes only ‘Joker’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Featuring a cast led by Matt Damon alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, and Robert Pattinson, the film retells Homer’s classic story of Odysseus’s long and treacherous journey home after the Trojan War. It’s become Nolan’s highest-grossing film since his Batman trilogy days, a genuine testament to just how far his commercial appeal extends beyond superhero franchises.

Critical reception has matched the box office momentum step for step. ‘The Odyssey’ has tied the Rotten Tomatoes record for the highest-rated Nolan movie alongside ‘Memento’ and ‘The Dark Knight,’ with an audience approval score reaching a record 97%. That combination of critical acclaim and commercial dominance has made it one of the most talked-about theatrical events of the entire year.

Demand for the film’s IMAX 70mm format has remained especially intense throughout its run, with showtimes reportedly selling out a full month in advance following the latest batch of ticket releases extending into mid-September. Given that the film has already surpassed both ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ as Nolan’s highest-grossing project, and still hasn’t opened in several key international markets, its final worldwide total is likely to climb considerably higher before its theatrical run wraps.

For a filmmaker already regarded as one of the defining directorial voices of his generation, crossing the billion-dollar mark with a sword-and-sandal epic based on ancient Greek poetry only reinforces just how much audiences trust the Nolan name at this point. Whether ‘The Odyssey’ can eventually challenge his Batman films for the title of his highest-grossing project outright remains the next major question as its run continues.
