Christopher Nolan has made a habit out of turning his films into awards season juggernauts, and the pattern shows no signs of slowing down. From ‘Inception’ to ‘Dunkirk’ to his Best Picture-winning ‘Oppenheimer,’ the director has built a reputation for delivering movies that dominate not just at the box office but across nearly every craft category on Oscar night.

That track record has fans and awards prognosticators paying extremely close attention to how his newest release might perform once nomination season rolls around. With ‘The Odyssey’ now playing in theaters to a wave of critical acclaim, the awards chatter has already kicked into high gear well before any formal campaigns even begin.

Awards analyst Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture has put a number on that speculation, and it is a big one. According to Next Best Picture’s team, ‘The Odyssey’ is currently predicted to receive 14 Oscar nominations, a haul that would place it among the most decorated films of the year.

The predicted nominations span nearly every corner of the awards show, starting with the two biggest prizes in the building. Best Picture and Best Director are both on the list, continuing Nolan’s streak of near automatic inclusion in those races following his win for ‘Oppenheimer.’

On the acting side, Matt Damon is projected for a Best Actor nomination for his turn as Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway is predicted to compete in Best Supporting Actress for her role as Penelope. Those two alongside Nolan give the film three of its most high profile potential nods right out of the gate.

The rest of the predicted haul leans heavily into the technical and craft categories, where Nolan’s films have traditionally cleaned up. Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects round out the full predicted slate.

That kind of across-the-board recognition tracks with what critics have already been saying about the film’s craftsmanship. Reviews out of the film’s early screenings have repeatedly pointed to its massive practical scale, its authentic locations, and its old-school approach to visual effects as some of its biggest strengths.

If ‘The Odyssey’ does land anywhere close to 14 nominations, it would represent one of the strongest showings of Nolan’s career at the Oscars. ‘Oppenheimer’ famously dominated its own awards season with 13 nominations before ultimately winning Best Picture and Best Director, and industry analysts have already floated the idea that ‘The Odyssey’ could match or even exceed that number.

Part of what makes this prediction notable is just how early it is coming together. The film only recently opened in theaters, yet its critical reception and technical achievements have already been enough to convince awards watchers that its path to a broad nomination haul is more likely than not.

How many Oscar nominations do you think The Odyssey will actually receive?

Of course, predictions made this early in the season tend to shift as the year goes on and more contenders enter the conversation. Films like ‘Dune: Part Three’ and other late 2026 releases are expected to compete for attention in many of the same categories, meaning ‘The Odyssey’ will have real competition on its way to nomination morning.

Still, for a film that has already been called one of Nolan’s finest achievements by multiple critics, a 14-nomination projection feels like a fitting reflection of the ambition on display. Whether that number holds up will become clearer as the film continues its run and awards season begins in earnest.
