Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Is Sailing Toward a Massive Box Office Victory in the U.K. and Ireland

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is preparing for its U.K. and Ireland release, and early predictions suggest the epic adventure could become one of the biggest films of 2026. According to cinema advertising company Pearl & Dean, the film is currently expected to open with between £8 million and £10 million during its first weekend, with a possible total theatrical run of £45 million to £55 million.

Those numbers would place The Odyssey among Nolan’s strongest performers in the region, continuing a long history of successful releases from the filmmaker.

Over the last two decades, Nolan has built one of the strongest box office records in Hollywood. His films have consistently attracted large audiences, from The Dark Knight trilogy to original projects like Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk. His most recent movie, Oppenheimer, became his biggest success so far in the U.K., earning £59.8 million and becoming the highest-grossing biopic in the country.

Now, The Odyssey is looking to continue that momentum. One of the biggest reasons behind the strong early interest is Nolan’s reputation for creating major theatrical experiences. The director has been one of the biggest supporters of IMAX filmmaking, and The Odyssey is his first movie shot entirely using IMAX cameras.

That decision has already created major demand. The BFI IMAX, which has the largest cinema screen in the U.K., reportedly sold £750,000 worth of tickets within its first 24 hours of availability. The venue has also added nonstop screenings to keep up with audience interest.

However, the film will need more than dedicated Nolan fans to become a major financial success. With a reported production budget of $250 million, The Odyssey needs strong support from general audiences as well.

Fortunately, the movie has a major advantage with its cast. The film features several globally recognized stars, including Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. Their combined popularity could help bring in viewers who may not usually rush to see a historical epic.

The film does face some challenges, though. Unlike Oppenheimer, which benefited from the unexpected success of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon alongside Barbie, The Odyssey does not have a similar cultural event helping it. The movie also carries a 15 age rating in the U.K., which can sometimes limit younger audiences.

Still, history suggests that large-scale historical adventures can perform well. Films like Gladiator, which earned £31.3 million in the U.K., and Gladiator II, which reached £32 million, have shown that audiences remain interested in epic stories. Even Troy, another adaptation inspired by ancient mythology, managed a successful run in 2004.

Before release, The Odyssey has faced some online criticism involving casting choices and creative decisions. However, much of that discussion has remained limited to online spaces and may not have a major impact on regular moviegoers.

The strongest factor working in the film’s favor is the response from critics and early viewers. Early reactions have praised Nolan’s ambition, the scale of the production, and the decision to create a true big-screen experience.

With a powerful cast, strong audience interest, and Nolan’s proven track record, The Odyssey is expected to become one of the major box office stories of the year. While its final numbers remain unknown, the early forecast suggests the film is on course for another major success in Nolan’s already impressive career.
