Christopher Nolan has spent decades building a reputation as one of the only filmmakers whose name alone can sell out an IMAX screen, and this summer that reputation is being tested in real time by a nearly three hour, R rated adaptation of a 2,700 year old Greek poem. The film brought home 123.5 million dollars domestically on its opening weekend, with a global launch of 263.7 million dollars, marking Nolan’s highest grossing worldwide opening ever. That kind of debut would normally be the headline on its own, but ‘The Odyssey‘ had other plans.

Instead of the usual second weekend fade that even the biggest blockbusters experience, Nolan’s epic has kept its audience remarkably intact. The film earned 25.9 million dollars on its second Friday, with estimates pointing to an 84.5 million dollar domestic total for the frame, a drop of just 32 percent from its opening. That is the exact number fans and box office trackers have been buzzing about, with accounts highlighting the film’s staggering hold compared to other recent tentpoles.

According to industry estimates cited by Deadline, that second weekend total of roughly 84.5 million dollars would be the best second weekend a Christopher Nolan film has ever posted, topping the 75.1 million dollar second weekend record previously held by 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight’. For a filmmaker whose resume includes some of the most beloved blockbusters of the last twenty years, that is not a small footnote, it is a genuine milestone.

‘The Odyssey’ Fans Are So Desperate That Even 2 AM and 7 AM IMAX Screenings Are Selling Out

The film’s ability to hold audiences is being credited in part to its premium format strategy. The Odyssey is available in IMAX, premium large formats, and 70mm, formats that reportedly accounted for 58 percent of the film’s second weekend gross, up from 53 percent in its first weekend. That suggests moviegoers are not just showing up once, they are actively seeking out the biggest screen possible to experience Nolan’s vision as intended.

The numbers get even more staggering when placed against Nolan’s own filmography. ‘The Odyssey’ already stands as Nolan’s biggest global opening, ahead of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ at 249 million dollars, ‘The Dark Knight’ at 198 million dollars, and ‘Oppenheimer’ at 180 million dollars. Among R rated films specifically, ‘The Odyssey’ is currently on pace for the second best second weekend ever recorded, trailing only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ 96.8 million dollar second weekend from 2024.

Cast wise, the film leans heavily on star power to match its scale. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, leading an ensemble that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and John Leguizamo. That kind of roster, paired with Nolan’s brand, appears to be exactly why the film is defying typical second weekend drop off patterns.

Looking ahead, the real test may already be on the horizon. Next weekend brings Sony and Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, and how ‘The Odyssey’ holds against that juggernaut will help determine whether it can eventually pass ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s’ 1.33 billion dollar global total to become the highest grossing R rated film of all time unadjusted for inflation.

With ‘The Odyssey’ still sailing strong more than a week into release, is Nolan quietly assembling his biggest commercial hit yet, and can this odyssey really survive a collision with Spidey next weekend?
