Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Refuses to Slow Down, and the Numbers Prove It

Most movies follow a predictable pattern once they hit theaters: a big opening weekend, a solid critical reception, and then a gradual fade as attention shifts to whatever’s next. Christopher Nolan’s latest epic has apparently decided to skip that part entirely.

‘The Odyssey‘ opened to massive numbers and immediate critical acclaim, but more than a week into its theatrical run, the film is still climbing rather than settling. That kind of sustained momentum is rare for any release, let alone one already generating comparisons to some of Nolan’s most celebrated work.

The clearest sign of that staying power comes from IMDb, where the film has continued moving up the platform’s coveted Top 250 list well after its initial debut. It first entered the rankings at number fifty-nine, a placement that already made Christopher Nolan the director with the most films ever featured on that list, surpassing filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Stanley Kubrick.

That ranking hasn’t stayed put, though. Nolan now has nine total films represented in the Top 250, with seven of them landing inside the top one hundred, a level of consistency virtually unmatched by any other director on the platform. On IMDb specifically, ‘The Odyssey’ currently holds an 8.5 out of 10 rating based on more than one hundred sixty-four thousand user ratings, a score that already places it among the highest-rated entries in Nolan’s entire filmography.

Letterboxd has told a similarly striking story. The platform’s users have pushed ‘The Odyssey’ into the site’s all-time Top 500 list, making it the highest-rated film of 2026 on Letterboxd and tying Nolan with Andrei Tarkovsky for the second-most films by any director to ever crack that list. The film currently sits at a 4.4 rating on the platform, with nearly one and a half million logged views according to SlashFilm’s reporting.

That kind of audience enthusiasm hasn’t been limited to user-driven platforms either. On Rotten Tomatoes, ‘The Odyssey’ debuted with a ninety-eight percent critics’ score, officially overtaking both ‘Memento’ and ‘The Dark Knight’, which had previously been tied at ninety-four percent as Nolan’s highest-rated films on the site. Its Popcornmeter audience score has climbed even higher, currently sitting around ninety-seven percent based on more than a thousand verified user ratings, again surpassing prior fan favorites from his filmography.

Individual performances within the film have also drawn unusually strong praise. Reports indicate ‘The Odyssey’ currently stands as the best-reviewed project in the careers of several major cast members, including Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, and Lupita Nyong’o, suggesting the film’s acclaim runs deeper than Nolan’s reputation alone.

The film’s commercial performance has matched its critical reception step for step. ‘The Odyssey’ ruled the box office during its opening weekend, delivering one of the biggest debuts of the year, and it’s reportedly on track to potentially join the billion-dollar club before its theatrical run wraps.

With reviews, ratings, and box office numbers all continuing to trend upward rather than plateauing, ‘The Odyssey’ is shaping up to be one of the defining cinematic events of the year, and one that’s still writing its own record book more than a week after release.
