‘Citadel’ Season 2 Is Finally Here and Prime Video Is Betting Everything on Its Second Chance

Few streaming gambles have been quite as audacious, or quite as scrutinized, as the one Prime Video took when it commissioned ‘Citadel’ back in 2023. The Russo Brothers-produced spy thriller carries a staggering production budget of around $300 million for its first season alone, making it one of the most expensive television series ever made. Despite that enormous investment, the show landed with a thud among critics, leaving Prime Video in the uncomfortable position of defending a flagship that never quite ignited.

Season 1 earned a 51% critics score and a 62% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, numbers that are difficult to justify when your show costs as much as a major Hollywood blockbuster franchise. Still, Prime Video pressed forward, doubling down on the property and its global universe rather than quietly walking away. That decision is now coming to a head, with the official @CitadelonPrime account announcing on X that the new season arrives on May 6, featuring returning stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden front and center.

All seven episodes of Season 2 will drop simultaneously on May 6, 2026, in a full binge release rather than a weekly rollout, giving fans the chance to consume the entire season in one sitting. The season will be available exclusively on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. The decision to go full-binge signals a vote of confidence from the streamer, framing the release as an event rather than a slow burn.

The new season once again follows Mason Kane, Nadia Sinh, and Bernard Orlick as elite operatives forced back into action after a terrifying new threat emerges, requiring them to recruit an unlikely team of skilled agents for a globe-spanning mission to stop a conspiracy with the potential to reshape humanity. That threat centers on new technology capable of taking over a person’s mind and instantly turning them into an assassin, a premise that leans harder into sci-fi territory than the first season did.

Returning cast members Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Stanley Tucci are joined by new additions including Jack Reynor, Matt Berry, and Lina El Arabi. The Peripheral’s Jack Reynor, Senna’s Gabriel Leone, and The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Rahul Kohli are among several exciting new names expanding the ensemble. The trailer, which dropped in April, pointed to a noticeably darker and more kinetic tone than what Season 1 delivered.

Two spinoff series, ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’ and ‘Citadel: Diana’, have since been cancelled, making Season 2 of the flagship show something of a final argument for the franchise’s survival. With the pressure of a stumbled first season and a collapsed spinoff universe behind it, showrunner David Weil and the Russo Brothers have a narrow window to prove the IP still has a future. Whether Madden and Chopra Jonas can finally deliver the sleek, emotionally grounded thriller this show always promised is the question streaming audiences will be answering this week.
