Colin Farrell Hopes This DCU Movie Still Sees the Light of Day
Colin Farrell recently opened up about the long-stalled DC movie Sgt. Rock, sharing his thoughts on what could have been.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, the actor said he still thinks the project deserves to happen, even though it seems to be stuck in limbo.
Farrell said, “God, that was a fantastic script. I wonder what’s happening with it.” He explained that he had been set to work on the movie with director Luca Guadagnino, and they had spoken a few times about the project.
“I know nothing about it, brother. I was going to do it with Luca. We spoke about it a couple of times and had some really nice chats. I have no idea where it is now, but it should be made. It’s really, really good. There’s some wonderful stuff in it.” He said.
The movie was supposed to follow Sgt. Rock teaming up with a French resistance fighter during World War II as they race to find the Spear of Destiny before the Nazis do. Producer Peter Safran once described it as a war story that looks at heroism and conflict.
Back in late 2024, writer Justin Kuritzkes finished the script, and Luca Guadagnino was in talks to direct with Daniel Craig set to star.
The film seemed like it was moving forward, especially since the trio had worked together on Queer (2024). But by early 2025, Craig stepped away from the role, reportedly because of scheduling issues and the poor reaction to Queer. That’s when Colin Farrell entered negotiations to replace him.
Production was later paused in April due to problems with filming locations, but there was still talk of restarting the project for 2026. However, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn eventually put things on hold, saying the story wasn’t where he wanted it to be creatively. Guadagnino later left the project too.
Gunn was open about why the film stalled. He said that even after several rewrites, the script just wasn’t working. “It wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be creatively,” Gunn said. “Even after a third draft, it just wasn’t changing. It wasn’t getting better. It was staying in the same place. And I said, ‘We can’t make this film. We can’t. It’s not good. We know it’s not good.’”
He explained that he didn’t want to make a movie that would end up disappointing everyone involved. “Everyone is going to be upset at the end of this. It’s going to come out, the movie’s not going to be good. The director’s going to look bad, the screenwriter’s going to look bad, and we’re going to look bad. So I don’t want to have this. We’re not going to make the movie. And so we killed it.”
At this point, it seems Sgt. Rock is no longer moving forward, at least for now. But Farrell’s comments show that the actor still believes in the story and hopes it can find its way back someday.
