Almost 30 years after the release of the 1997 sci-fi horror film Event Horizon, fans are finally getting more of the story. But this time, it’s not a movie, it’s a comic book.

The new comic is called Event Horizon: Dark Descent. It is being published by IDW Publishing and will be released in August. This five-part series is a prequel, which means it takes place before the events of the movie.

The story will explore what happened to the first crew of the spaceship Event Horizon. It will look at their journey into a terrifying and strange dimension. Readers will learn more about Captain Kilpack and the horrors the original crew faced.

The comic promises to keep the same scary, intense tone as the film. It will be rated for mature readers, just like the movie.

A talented creative team is working on the series. Writer Christian Ward, who has won Eisner Awards, is leading the story. Artist Tristan Jones, known for Aliens: Defiance, is handling the visuals. Pip Martin, who worked on That Texas Blood, is the colorist.

Ward said he’s excited to expand the world of Event Horizon. “It’s a huge privilege to be handed the keys of such a beloved film, one I take very seriously and I have some extremely exciting things up my sleeve. Big gory swings will be happening. You’ll never see the film in the same light again.”

Jones added, “I think what Christian’s laying out and adding to the lore is going to surprise people. It’s certainly given me a lot of gnarly, visceral stuff to chew on visually, which is always fun and knowing that this is being done directly in collaboration with the team behind the film certainly helps lock things in as something fans of the film will want to explore with us.”

Event Horizon: Dark Descent #1 will be available on August 20. The first issue will have several covers, including artwork by Jeffrey Alan Love, Christian Ward, Martin Simmonds, and Joshua Hixson. There will also be a foil version and a sketch version of the cover.

This comic is part of IDW Dark, a special horror line from IDW Publishing. The company is also turning other Paramount horror films into comics, including A Quiet Place, Smile, The Twilight Zone, and Sleepy Hollow.
