Crunchyroll’s 2027 Anime Slate Could Turn Sony Into a Box Office Powerhouse

Anime has quietly become one of the most reliable forces at the global box office over the past year, with theatrical releases pulling in numbers that used to be reserved for major studio blockbusters. That shift has been driven almost entirely by Crunchyroll’s aggressive theatrical strategy, anchored by the record-breaking success of ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Infinity Castle.’

That first ‘Infinity Castle’ film alone has grossed well over $778 million worldwide, cementing Crunchyroll and its parent company Sony as genuine players in the theatrical film business rather than a niche streaming service dabbling in movie releases. With that kind of momentum behind them, all eyes have turned to what comes next for the anime giant heading into 2027.

According to a report, Crunchyroll is lining up four major anime films for release next year, a slate that could hand Sony some of 2027’s biggest global hits. The reported lineup includes ‘Witch on the Holy Night’ on January 29, ‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle 2’ with a tentative September 18 date, and ‘Solo Leveling: Beyond the System’ targeting an October window, with a fourth film still to be confirmed.

Of the three named titles, ‘Witch on the Holy Night’ is the one with an officially locked release date. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed the film will open exclusively in U.S. and Canadian theaters on January 29, adapting Kinoko Nasu’s 2012 Type-Moon visual novel and animated by ufotable, the same studio behind ‘Infinity Castle.’ The story follows apprentice magician Aoko Aozaki as her quiet life is upended after meeting a mysterious boy, with the original Japanese voice cast returning for both subtitled and English dub versions.

‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle 2’ remains the most anticipated of the bunch, but Ufotable has been notably cautious about locking in a release window. The studio confirmed earlier this year that the sequel would not arrive in 2026, placing it instead among its “future projects” and pointing toward a 2027 release at the earliest, with the first film alone having taken roughly three and a half years to complete production.

‘Solo Leveling: Beyond the System’ sits in a similar spot. Aniplex and Crunchyroll officially confirmed the film during Anime Expo 2026, describing it as a theatrical bridge between Season 2 and a future Season 3, animated once again by A-1 Pictures. While a 2027 release has been confirmed, no specific month or date has been locked in publicly, leaving plenty of room for fans to speculate about exactly when Sung Jinwoo’s next chapter will hit screens.

With one film still unannounced and two of the three named titles still awaiting official date confirmations, Crunchyroll’s 2027 slate is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched theatrical calendars in the anime space. If even half of these releases perform anywhere close to ‘Infinity Castle’s numbers, Sony could be looking at one of its strongest theatrical years in recent memory, anime or otherwise.
