Those dragons turn out to be helicopters carrying armed men who kill every adult they meet, and Yuru is rescued by an outsider named Dera.
What makes the premiere so effective is how much it teaches viewers before the chaos begins. The opener sits with Yuru’s routine of hunting, helping neighbors and riding home with his friend Danji before the attack shatters it. Asa, meanwhile, has been living in a cage while performing a mysterious duty for the village.
From there the plot widens fast. Yuru is reunited with Asa at the Kagemori mansion, and Dera drags him around the city to lift his spirits, only for the group to realize they are being followed. Later, Higashi Village is attacked by a man wielding katana Daemons, and Yuru feels betrayed by Danji.
How Both Cours Fit Together Into One Story
The first cour is the setup, and it treats worldbuilding as the main event. Yuru learns he was separated from his sister young, and that Higashi Village has been cut off from the modern Lowlands for centuries. That single reveal reframes the quiet opening as a kind of sealed time capsule.
The second cour shifts gears. It arrived with new theme songs and, according to Comic Basics, continued the escalating conflict between the twins and a new foe tied to the pair known as Left and Right. The tone is heavier, yet the show still finds room for character work.
That balance shows up clearly in one of the standout episodes. Ending Explained and What the Finale Sets Up
The penultimate stretch is where the ending really begins to take shape. Episode 23 focused on the aftermath of the attack on the Kagemori household and on Akio’s escape. Earlier, Natsuki demanded to know why Akio betrayed the Kagemori clan, and he offered no explanation.
That betrayal lands hard because of who it hurts. Haruo is wounded by the idea that Akio must die, since a traitor cannot be permitted in the household, but murdering an old friend is far from easy. It is the kind of grey area Arakawa has always liked, where duty and friendship pull in opposite directions.
As for the finale itself, Episode 24 is titled “Higashi Village and Nishino Village” and streams today with English subtitles. Since it has only just aired, the safest reading is that the ending is a bridge rather than a full stop. Many fans expected loose ends to remain, with Akio’s true identity and motives still unclear.
Nishino Village and Whether a Second Season Is Coming
The biggest new wrinkle is Nishino Village. Episode 23 finally showed more of the mysterious western locale, whose residents claim they have waited 400 years for their opportunity. They appear eager to keep the Kagemoris and Higashi Village fighting each other, likely so they can take Yuru and Asa for themselves.
That plot thread also explains why the story cannot simply wrap up. The twins eventually discover they must unite to save the world from destruction, according to the series overview. A third faction circling the twins means the war is far from settled.
On the production side, the picture is less certain. The manga is still ongoing, and there is no announced renewal yet. Still, Arakawa has said in interviews that she already has the ending and its major beats mapped out.
