Daisy Edgar-Jones Steps Into the Spotlight for ‘Sense and Sensibility’ as UK Release Nears
Period drama fans have had a long wait for Jane Austen’s beloved sisters to return to the big screen in a proper theatrical adaptation, and that wait is finally coming to an end. With the film’s UK release just days away, its cast has entered full promotional mode, giving fans their latest glimpse of the story before it finally reaches theaters.
Daisy Edgar-Jones was recently spotted at a press event promoting the film, continuing a rollout that has steadily built anticipation since the project’s first trailer debuted earlier this year. The actress leads the ensemble as Elinor Dashwood, the responsible eldest sister at the emotional center of Austen’s story, in what marks the first major theatrical adaptation of the novel since Ang Lee’s celebrated 1995 version starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.

Directed by Georgia Oakley and written by novelist and screenwriter Diana Reid, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ follows the Dashwood family after the sudden death of their father forces the mother and her three daughters into financial hardship, leaving them to navigate love, class, and security in Georgian-era England. The film is set to open in the United Kingdom on September 25, just two days from now, before arriving in United States theaters on October 16.
Edgar-Jones is joined by Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, Elinor’s passionate and outspoken younger sister, with the two actresses bringing genuine history to their on-screen sibling dynamic, having previously worked together as teenagers in the 2018 film ‘Pond Life.’ Caitríona Balfe rounds out the Dashwood family as Mrs. Dashwood, while George MacKay steps into a leading man role as Edward Ferrars, marking a notable departure from the supporting war-drama work that first brought him wide recognition.
The supporting cast includes Frank Dillane as John Willoughby, Herbert Nordrum as Colonel Brandon, Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Jennings, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach as the youngest Dashwood sister, Margaret. Behind the scenes, the film comes from Working Title Films, the studio responsible for several of the most acclaimed Austen adaptations of the past two decades, including 2005’s ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ produced once again here by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner alongside November Pictures’ India Flint and Jo Wallett.

Edgar-Jones’s casting as Elinor arrives at a particularly strong moment in her career, following major box office success with 2024’s ‘Twisters,’ which grossed more than $370 million worldwide, and earlier acclaim for her breakout performance in ‘Normal People.’ That combination of critical credibility and commercial draw has made her one of the more closely watched leads in this fall’s crowded prestige release calendar, and early reviews have already begun weighing in ahead of the film’s wide rollout.
A recent review from Deadline described the film as a rebellious take on Austen’s classic satire, suggesting Oakley and Reid have aimed for something more naturalistic and emotionally grounded than previous adaptations rather than a strictly faithful retelling. That approach appears deliberate, with the filmmaking team promising a stronger focus on the evolving relationship between Elinor and Marianne as the emotional backbone of the story.
The film’s rollout has already shifted once, with its original U.S. release date of September 11 pushed back to October 16 to give the adaptation more room to build momentum following its UK debut. As of now, Focus Features has not announced any digital rental or streaming premiere date, with the studio treating the film as an exclusive theatrical release for the time being, a strategy that signals real confidence in its box office potential.
With its UK premiere just around the corner and a starry American release still weeks away, ‘Sense and Sensibility’ is shaping up to be one of the more significant period drama releases of the fall movie season. Between Edgar-Jones’s rising star power and a supporting cast built for awards-season attention, all signs point to this adaptation carving out its own place alongside the story’s most beloved previous versions.
