The trailer for Splitsville is out, and it gives a wild glimpse into the kind of trouble that can happen when couples try to solve their problems in risky ways.

Starring Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona, the film is a comedy about relationships falling apart, blurred lines between friends, and what happens when rules get ignored.

The story focuses on two couples who are close friends. One pair is going through a divorce, while the other is testing out an open marriage.

But things take a messy turn when one of the men ends up sleeping with the other man’s wife. What starts as an experiment in honesty quickly leads to hurt feelings, jealousy, and conflict.

Michael Angelo Covino directed the film and also appears in it. He co-wrote the script with Kyle Marvin. Both have worked together before, and this time they’re also part of the cast. Johnson plays Julie, and Arjona plays Ashley. The film also features Nicholas Braun, David Castañeda, O-T Fagbenle, Charlie Gillespie, and Simon Webster.

Behind the scenes, Johnson helped produce the movie through her company TeaTime Pictures. Arjona also worked as an executive producer with Paul Barbeau. The movie is being released by Neon, which picked up the film for distribution in the U.S.

The project began coming together in mid-2024 when Covino, Marvin, Johnson, and Arjona signed on. Filming started in September that year and wrapped up a month later. In November, more cast members joined, including Braun and Castañeda.

Splitsville had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025. It was part of the Cannes Premiere section and drew attention for its mix of sharp humor and uncomfortable moments. The film is now set to release in theaters on August 22, 2025.

The trailer hints at fast-paced scenes full of arguments, confusion, and awkward humor. It’s clear the movie wants to make people laugh, but also think about the limits of love and friendship. It’s not just about romance, it’s about how easy it is for people to get in over their heads when they try to change the rules.

This kind of comedy works best when it feels real, and Splitsville looks like it captures some honest, and very messy, moments. It’s always interesting when a movie tackles modern relationships without pretending things are simple. With a strong cast and a clear direction, this could be one to watch.

What do you think? Are you into movies that explore these kinds of relationship issues, or does it feel too chaotic? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
