Few gigs carry the prestige of hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’, and fewer actors get invited back often enough to join the club of 3-time hosts. Dakota Johnson, billed as a famously deadpan host, has now done exactly that. Her return to Studio 8H arrived with a surprise guest and one of the show’s most striking promo images in a while.

Johnson’s history with the show goes back several years. She first hosted in 2015 to promote ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, then returned in January 2024 for ‘Madame Web’. She also appeared in Season 51 as “Madeline” during Lily Allen’s musical performance.

Cast member Ben Marshall has called her previous hosting stint memorable, particularly her work with the comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy. He also said she is able to deliver cutting jokes, including roasting the cast, while still winning over the audience.

This week the show teased her return with a black-and-white post captioned simply “Dakota Johnson!!!” and a bunny emoji. The 3-second clip shows Johnson in black bunny ears, a strapless black bodysuit and long black gloves, with a cigarette in her mouth. She leans on a stone ledge above a city street, with a Gothic spire rising behind her

The episode itself aired on October 3 as the second show of Season 52. Hardcore punk band Turnstile served as musical guest in its ‘SNL’ debut. Johnson was promoting her new thriller ‘Verity’.

Johnson’s opening monologue centered on her dating history. She joked about breaking up with 2 different musicians since her last hosting gig, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and singer-songwriter Role Model. She said this left her with a different relationship to music than other fans.

Then Taylor Swift stopped by for a cameo. The appearance slightly overshadowed Turnstile. The link makes sense, since Johnson also appeared in Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ music video.

Johnson took the stage in a skin-tight red dress and joked about her birthday. She said she would celebrate at midnight by standing in the middle of midtown in a latex dress looking for attention. Her birthday is October 4, which made her just the sixth host in ‘SNL’ history to appear on the show on her birthday. She also joked that she is still promoting ‘Madame Web’ because the movie hasn’t made any money yet.

The promo week was just as loose. Johnson teamed up with breakout star Ashley Padilla for a midweek sketch that was really a polished version of Thursday’s on-stage promos. Ben Marshall joined her for promos poking fun at Turnstile’s intense energy.

Johnson’s hosting slot lined up with the October 2 release of ‘Verity’. The R-rated psychological thriller is directed by Michael Showalter and based on the Colleen Hoover novel. She stars with Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, playing struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh. Lowen is hired to finish a bestselling series after a mysterious accident leaves the author unable to.

Next up on the ‘SNL’ stage is Shane Gillis with musical guest Rosalía on October 10. Inde Navarrette follows with Gracie Abrams as musical guest. Johnson, meanwhile, is set to make her feature directorial debut with ‘A Tree Is Blue’.

For now, her third time as host, bunny ears and all, shows how comfortable she has become on that stage.

Who stole the spotlight on ‘SNL’?
