In September 2019, Sony initiated development on a ‘Madame Web’ film for its shared universe dubbed SSU, hiring Sazama and Sharpless to pen the script. Clarkson was brought on board as director in May 2020, marking her feature film directorial debut. Dakota Johnson was cast in early 2022, with further castings, particularly for the Spider-Women characters, following in subsequent months.

The film, a suspense thriller, portrays Madame Web’s origin story in a standalone universe with a grounded approach. ‘Madame Web’ premiered on February 12, with a worldwide release taking place today, the review embargo was lifted yesterday, which is quite late but according to the first reactions, it’s obvious as to why. The movie currently holds a 17% Rating according to critics’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s just yet another “rotten” movie when it comes to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Now ahead of the premiere, Dakota Johnson talked to The Wrap regarding the movie’s script and how troubling the development of the movie was.

There were drastic changes. And I can’t even tell you what they were.

According to Dakota, the script that she agreed to film was significantly changed by the time the movie was actually filming. One of the main problems is her ability to see in the future.

It added so many different camera set-ups, like triple the amount of work, and it was very complex, and there’s only like minor differences between each version of the same scene, so it was like puzzle pieces, and really paying attention to what moment we’re in, and what angle we’re in, and continuity and things like that.

The main evidence that the dialogue also changed is the famous meme’d line “He was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died” which is apparently missing from the movie altogether.

Alas, no amount of rewrites and removed awkward lines can save ‘Madame Web’ from what is coming, recently first box office projections for the movie came out and the movie is expected to earn less than Morbius, yes you’ve read that right.

The projected opening weekend box office range for “Madame Web” is $25 million to $35 million, with an estimated total domestic box office range of $56 million to $101 million. For comparison Sony’s ‘Morbius’ known as one of the worst movies ever earned $73.9 million in the United States and Canada, along with $93.6 million in other territories, resulting in a total worldwide gross of $167.5 million.
