‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 3 Will Honor the Defenders, Deborah Ann Woll Teases

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 3 is shaping up to be one of the biggest street-level Marvel stories yet. With Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Elektra expected to return, fans have been wondering whether the growing cast could push Matt Murdock and his longtime allies into the background.

Deborah Ann Woll, however, says fans should not worry about the original ‘Daredevil’ characters being forgotten.

In an exclusive interview with The Direct, Woll discussed the upcoming third season and the challenge of balancing the returning Defenders with the characters who have been at the center of the ‘Daredevil’ story. Woll has played Karen Page throughout the original series and ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ and she made it clear that Karen remains important to the people making the show.

“I can say that Dario and the people who are creating the show, as well as myself, care deeply about Karen and what her storyline is,” Woll said.

She explained that Karen may not always be the main focus of an episode or storyline, but the team wants every moment involving her to matter.

“Whatever time I do get or don’t get or whatever works, you know, we fight every single second to make sure that that is valuable story progressing time that is true to who she is,” she added.

That could become especially important in Season 3, which is bringing several major characters from the former Netflix Marvel shows back into the story.

Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist are all expected to have roles, while Elektra is also returning. Their appearances have led to plenty of speculation that ‘Born Again’ could become a much larger Defenders story.

Woll addressed that possibility directly, saying she hopes the finished season respects all of the characters involved.

“I’m hoping and confident that what we create in the end, because we’re still a few more days left on Season 3, will honor all of our stories,” she told The Direct.

That does not necessarily mean Karen will have a smaller role. Woll did not confirm how much screen time her character will receive, so fans will have to wait for the season itself to see how the different storylines are divided.

Still, her comments suggest that Marvel is trying to avoid turning the new Defenders appearances into simple cameos. The returning heroes have their own histories and unfinished stories, while Karen, Matt Murdock and the rest of the original ‘Daredevil’ cast have built years of history of their own.

The timing of Woll’s comments is also notable. The interview took place shortly before production on Season 3 wrapped, meaning she was speaking about a story that was still being finalized.

With the Defenders returning and the street-level side of the MCU continuing to grow, Season 3 could become a major crossover chapter. But based on Woll’s comments, the show is not planning to sacrifice its original characters just to make room for the returning heroes.

For Karen fans, that may be the biggest takeaway. Even if she is not always at the center of the action, Woll’s comments suggest her story still has a place in the next chapter of ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’
