‘Dark Angel’ Shake-Up – Showrunner Allegedly Fired All Actors Over 40 to Keep Cast Younger”
According to comments from actors involved in Dark Angel, the sci-fi series went through a major creative shift when it moved from its original leadership into Season 2. The show, created by James Cameron and Charles H. Eglee and starring Jessica Alba as Max Guevara, was canceled after two seasons on Fox, but cast members have continued to speak about what changed behind the scenes.
The most striking claim comes from Nana Visitor, who played the antagonist Dr. Elizabeth Renfro. In an interview referenced by Screen Rant, Visitor said that a major cast overhaul happened when René Echevarria took over as showrunner for the second season. She suggested that older actors were deliberately removed from the series as part of a push toward a younger cast.
Visitor explained her version of events by saying, “They decided it was going to be all young people. They got rid of everybody who was over 40.” She also noted that the transition was tied to James Cameron stepping away from day-to-day involvement. In her view, this change altered the identity of the series and led to many cast members, including herself, being written out.
She added, “Cameron left, and it became a very different show. So I was gone, we were all gone, unfortunately. But I do believe if James Cameron’s version had been allowed to grow, it would have been a very interesting show.” Her comments reflect frustration about how the direction of the series shifted after the first season’s creative leadership changed.
Other cast members have also described a complicated production environment during Season 2. Valerie Rae Miller, who played Cindy, a super soldier in the series, spoke to Syfy about inconsistencies in how the show was being run. She described confusion over writing authority and character direction after the leadership change.

Miller said there were conflicting instructions about how characters should be written and performed. She noted that even though René Echevarria was officially running the show, some creative decisions still seemed influenced by earlier leadership. This, according to her, led to tension and uncertainty on set.
She also recalled disagreement over a storyline involving her character Cindy and Alec, played by Jensen Ackles. Miller said she opposed the direction the story was taking, especially regarding the portrayal of her queer character, but felt her concerns were not taken into account.
She described one interaction with the production team by saying, “I think he might have even hung the phone up in my face because he was not having it.” Miller added that the shift in leadership felt like a change in “captain,” suggesting that the new direction did not fully align with the vision established in Season 1.
The combined accounts from Visitor and Miller paint a picture of a series that changed significantly after its first season, both in tone and casting approach. While Dark Angel remains remembered for its original concept and strong start under James Cameron’s involvement, cast members suggest that behind-the-scenes changes played a major role in how the show evolved and ultimately concluded.
