David Fincher and Netflix Reportedly Clash Over Title of Squid Game American Spin-Off

Rumors about the American spin-off of Squid Game first surfaced in October 2024, with reports indicating that David Fincher has been working on the project since 2021. The series is reportedly being written by Dennis Kelly, the creator of the show Utopia.

However, Netflix has not officially confirmed the spin-off. In fact, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos dismissed it as merely a rumor. He may be holding off on any announcements to avoid drawing attention away from the main series, which recently released its second season.

Another possible reason for the silence could be that Netflix doesn’t want to overwhelm audiences, especially since a Squid Game reality show is already in the works.

If the spin-off does move forward, it might either be a direct remake of the original series set in an American context or a new story set within the same universe. Until Netflix provides more details, the project’s future remains uncertain.

Adding to the speculation, there’s now a rumor of a disagreement between David Fincher and Netflix regarding the spin-off’s title. According to entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, who shared the news on his Patreon account, Fincher doesn’t want to call his version “Squid Game”. Instead, he prefers naming it after a popular American game to give it a unique identity.

On the other hand, Netflix reportedly wants to retain the original title to capitalize on the brand recognition, given that Squid Game remains one of the platform’s most successful series. This difference of opinion has allegedly caused some tension between Fincher and the streaming giant.

As of now, these claims remain unverified, as neither Fincher nor Netflix has made an official statement on the matter.
