Fans have been waiting years for a live-action Gears of War movie, and now there is finally a major update. According to an exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly, the upcoming film is moving forward with director David Leitch and writer Jon Spaihts leading the project. The movie is being developed by Netflix and will focus on one of the most important stories from the Gears of War universe.

Entertainment Weekly revealed that the film will tell the origin story of Delta Squad, the group of soldiers that became the heart of the game franchise. The story will follow their fight for survival against the Locust, the terrifying underground creatures that launched a brutal war against humanity.

For longtime fans, this is a promising direction. Instead of jumping into later events from the games, the movie will go back to where everything began. It will explore how Delta Squad came together and how its members faced one of the biggest threats in the history of the Gears universe.

The project is being directed by David Leitch, who is known for action films such as Bullet Train and The Fall Guy. Jon Spaihts, who worked on the Dune films, is writing the screenplay. Their involvement has already created excitement among fans who hope the movie can capture the scale, action, and emotion of the games.

Matt Booty, Xbox’s Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about what makes Gears of War such a strong fit for a movie adaptation. “The game really is about the bonds between teams. It’s about brotherhood at its core,” Booty said. He also explained that the values at the center of the franchise could help shape the film’s story.

“When you go visit the studio, their tagline is ‘Never Fight Alone.’ So when you think about that for a dramatic narrative, it’s a pretty good starting point.”

That focus on teamwork has always been one of the defining parts of Gears of War. While the series is known for its intense battles, massive creatures, and futuristic weapons, the emotional connection between the soldiers has played an equally important role. Characters like Marcus Fenix and his squadmates became fan favorites because of their loyalty to each other during impossible situations.

The movie is part of a larger effort by Xbox to bring more of its gaming franchises to film and television. Following the success of projects such as Fallout and A Minecraft Movie, the company is expanding its presence in Hollywood. However, Gears of War remains one of its most anticipated adaptations.

Entertainment Weekly also reported that Netflix is still developing an animated Gears of War series alongside the live-action film. While details about that project remain limited, it shows that Netflix sees major potential in the franchise.

For now, many questions remain unanswered. The cast has not been announced, and Netflix has not revealed a release date. Even so, the confirmation that the movie will focus on Delta Squad’s first battle against the Locust gives fans a clearer idea of what to expect.

After years of waiting, Gears of War is finally making its move to the big screen. If the filmmakers stay true to the series’ themes of brotherhood, sacrifice, and survival, the adaptation could become one of the biggest video game movies in development today.
