‘Days of Thunder’ Star Tom Cruise Just Gave the Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger His Full Blessing

Hollywood has spent much of 2026 arguing over what a combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery would actually look like, and not everyone in the industry has been thrilled about it. Between antitrust lawsuits, skeptical filmmakers, and a coalition of state attorneys general fighting the deal in court, the $111 billion megamerger has become one of the most contentious storylines in the business.

Tom Cruise landed in the middle of that conversation this week for an entirely different reason. The actor sat down with Pat McAfee for a wide-ranging chat that was originally billed as a promotional stop for his upcoming projects, including his newly announced ‘Days of Thunder’ sequel.

But once the conversation turned to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison’s much-debated pledge to release 30 movies a year from the combined studio, Cruise didn’t hold back his enthusiasm. Speaking on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ this week, Cruise said he fully believes Paramount will deliver on that promise, framing the goal less as a corporate target and more as a mission for the entire industry to rally behind.

Cruise described the studios as something closer to family than business, saying the people working there matter to him personally, not just professionally. He argued that hitting 30 films a year isn’t something Paramount can pull off alone, and that it will take artists across Hollywood pitching in together to make it happen.

He went further, suggesting that if the industry rallies the way he hopes, that number could eventually climb from 30 films to 40. Cruise also pointed to a run of recent box office hits, including ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ as proof that ramping up production and giving rising filmmakers more opportunities is exactly what the industry needs right now.

It’s a notable show of support given how divisive Ellison’s promise has been since he first unveiled it. The pledge dates back to CinemaCon in April, when Ellison committed to a 30-film annual theatrical slate paired with a 45-day exclusive theatrical window, a commitment he later reaffirmed directly to major theater chains like AMC and Regal in order to win their backing for the merger.

Cruise’s comments arrive at a tense moment for the deal itself. A coalition of state attorneys general continues to challenge the merger on antitrust grounds, and the fight has recently centered on Paramount’s bid to retain a $1.88 billion bond tied to the ongoing case. A trial date has been set, adding more uncertainty to when, or if, the merger will fully close.

None of that seemed to weigh on Cruise during his conversation with McAfee. His relationship with the deal isn’t purely sentimental, either. He’s maintained a longstanding home at Paramount across franchises like ‘Mission: Impossible’ and ‘Top Gun,’ while also holding a first-look production deal at Warner Bros., giving him a stake on both sides of the potential union.

Whether or not Ellison’s 30-film promise proves realistic, Cruise’s endorsement adds a recognizable face to a pitch that has otherwise struggled to win over skeptics across Hollywood. As one of the industry’s most consistent box office draws, his willingness to publicly champion the plan carries a different kind of weight than a corporate statement ever could.

With the antitrust case still unresolved and opposition to the merger remaining vocal elsewhere in the industry, Cruise’s comments won’t settle the debate on their own. But they do signal that at least one of Hollywood’s biggest stars is ready to bet on the bigger, more ambitious version of Paramount that Ellison keeps promising.

What do you think of Tom Cruise backing Paramount’s ambitious 30-movie-a-year plan?
