DC Fans Question Andy Muschietti’s DCU Batman Commitment After His Latest Horror Move
Superhero movie fans have grown accustomed to long waits between casting announcements and actual production news, but the DC Universe’s take on Batman has tested that patience more than most. ‘The Brave and the Bold‘ was unveiled years ago with real fanfare, promising a fresh exploration of Bruce Wayne’s relationship with his son Damian, yet concrete updates have remained frustratingly scarce ever since.
That silence has left fans parsing every scrap of information about director Andy Muschietti’s schedule for clues about the project’s actual status. So when word surfaced that Muschietti was deep into work on another major franchise entirely, speculation about Batman’s place on his priority list reignited almost immediately.
In a recent interview with Variety, Muschietti confirmed he’s currently in the writers’ room working on Season 2 of HBO’s ‘It: Welcome to Derry,’ a 1930s-set prequel story adapted from an interlude in Stephen King’s original novel. He described the new season as leaning heavily into the “depression-era hustling” of the period, adding that the social and cultural struggles of the 1930s would sit at “the very center and the heart” of the story rather than being skipped over.
That commitment to a new season of horror television has sparked fresh speculation among DC fans about whether Muschietti’s attachment to ‘The Brave and the Bold’ is quietly slipping. Some have floated the possibility of the project being delayed or handed to a replacement director like Sam Raimi, while others have pointed to the series’ clear success as reasonable justification for Muschietti prioritizing it right now.
That skepticism isn’t coming out of nowhere. James Gunn has previously stated ‘The Brave and the Bold’ depends entirely on the script being ready, and he’s been explicit about not wanting to “cloud the Batsphere” while Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman Part II’ continues moving forward, preferring not to release two separate Batman films in the same calendar year.
Muschietti himself has repeatedly reaffirmed his attachment to the Batman project despite the lack of forward movement. Speaking with his sister and producing partner Barbara Muschietti in an earlier interview, the pair confirmed the intention to move forward remained firmly in place, even as they declined to share specifics, with Andy at one point joking he’d “screwed it already” after revealing more than he’d intended about the timeline.
That track record of loyalty to the project has helped calm some fan anxiety, even amid the current wave of concern. Muschietti even worked a subtle Batman easter egg into the ‘Welcome to Derry’ series premiere, featuring a shot of Detective Comics #298, the comic that marked Clayface’s first appearance, a small nod that suggested his mind hadn’t fully left Gotham behind.
With no confirmed production date, casting announcements, or firm timeline for ‘The Brave and the Bold’ even after years of development, Muschietti’s continued success with ‘Welcome to Derry’ only sharpens the contrast between his two major projects. Whether Batman fans need to worry about a full-scale directorial shakeup or simply accept a longer wait remains an open question that only Warner Bros. and DC Studios can answer.
