That instinct kicked into overdrive this week after Gunn responded to a fan online, addressing comparisons between the upcoming series and other true crime-adjacent shows. In his reply, Gunn clarified that the project is a DCU true crime docuseries and that he wasn’t sure what it had in common with the shows fans were referencing, while also expressing appreciation for the support and hoping it would help boost interest in what he called his “Melty Ice Cube” series later this fall.
That offhand nickname, paired with how Gunn referred to the overall project, is exactly what’s fueling fresh speculation. The official title of the series is ‘The People v. Gunn has previously described the show as DC’s first foray into the true crime genre, produced by ‘American Vandal’ creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, who serve as writers and showrunners.
If Gunn is indeed treating “The People v.” as a recurring format rather than a title unique to Grodd’s case, it would open the door for future seasons built around entirely different DC villains standing trial, each anchored by Jimmy Olsen’s in-universe investigative journalism. That kind of anthology structure would let DC Studios keep reusing the show’s mockumentary format and Daily Planet setting without needing to continue Grodd’s specific storyline indefinitely.
