Joe Manganiello is opening up about one of the hardest periods of his life, revealing that he spent years battling serious health problems that nearly changed everything. The actor, known for roles in projects like ‘True Blood’, ‘Magic Mike’, and his appearance as Deathstroke in the DC universe, shared details of his journey through his upcoming memoir ‘Bloodlines’.

According to the synopsis for the book, Manganiello faced a series of autoimmune-related illnesses that affected multiple parts of his body. The actor revealed that the conditions attacked his thyroid, digestive system, skin, lungs, and eyes, creating a long and difficult medical battle.

The seven-year struggle reportedly included constant pain, uncertainty, and a major medical procedure that resulted in what the memoir describes as a “life-saving organ amputation.” Manganiello explained that doctors struggled to understand what was happening to him, leaving him searching for answers.

The actor discussed his experience in a statement shared with People, describing the period as one of the most difficult challenges he has ever faced. “It was the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure,” Manganiello said.

As traditional medical answers became harder to find, Manganiello explored different approaches while trying to understand his condition. The memoir reveals that he turned to personal research, spirituality, family history, and unconventional practices during his search for healing.

Part of that journey involved looking into his ancestry and discovering stories about his family’s past. Manganiello learned more about relatives who survived the Armenian genocide and others who dealt with serious health struggles, which helped him connect his own experience with a larger family story.

The actor said the process changed the way he looked at his own suffering. He explained that writing ‘Bloodlines’ gave him a new perspective on everything he went through and helped him understand how the experience shaped him.

“I hope that what I went through on this journey can give readers hope that answers and healing may lie for them on the other side of whatever they are fighting through,” Manganiello said in his statement to People.

Manganiello added that the writing process helped him see the difficult years in a different way. “The process of writing this book gave me the gift of perspective that helped me to see that my suffering was a cocoon from which I would emerge forever changed,” he shared.

While fans know Manganiello as an actor who often plays strong and physically demanding characters, including the villain Deathstroke in the DC Extended Universe, he revealed that his biggest battle happened away from cameras.

The actor has continued working throughout his career and has also remained in the spotlight for his personal life. He was previously married to actress Sofía Vergara from 2015 until their divorce in 2024. He is now engaged to Caitlin O’Connor after proposing in 2025.

Manganiello’s memoir ‘Bloodlines’ is expected to give fans a much deeper look at his personal journey, including the health challenges that shaped his life. The book is scheduled to be released on October 13 and will reveal more about the actor’s battle, recovery, and the lessons he learned along the way.
