DCU Just Cancelled a Major Project, and Fans Think Bigger Problems Are Brewing
DC Studios has quietly lost another project from its original DC Universe slate. This time, it’s the planned ‘Booster Gold‘ TV series for HBO, which has officially stopped moving forward, according to the show’s writer, David Jenkins.
Jenkins shared the news himself on Threads, confirming that his version of the series is no longer happening. His post was short but left little room for doubt. “My ‘Booster Gold’ won’t be moving forward. Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”
The comment referenced Mahershala Ali’s recent interview with GQ, where the actor revealed he had accepted that Marvel’s long-delayed ‘Blade’ reboot was no longer happening with him attached. Ali explained, “For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on. Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. I feel ready to move on from the ‘Blade’ questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.”
By sharing that quote, Jenkins appeared to compare the fate of ‘Booster Gold’ to Marvel’s stalled ‘Blade’ project, suggesting the series simply never reached the point where production could begin.
‘Booster Gold’ was first announced in 2023 when DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the first chapter of their new DC Universe. The lineup included projects like ‘Superman,’ ‘Supergirl,’ ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘Lanterns,’ ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ ‘Swamp Thing,’ ‘Paradise Lost,’ and the ‘Booster Gold’ series.
Some of those projects have already moved forward. ‘Superman’ and ‘Supergirl’ have reached theaters, while ‘Creature Commandos’ was released in 2024. ‘Lanterns’ is expected to premiere next month, and several other announced projects remain in different stages of development.
However, ‘Booster Gold’ is not the first project to disappear from the original slate. Earlier this year, James Gunn confirmed that ‘The Authority’ was no longer in development. At the time, though, Gunn said ‘Booster Gold’ was still moving forward, while ‘Paradise Lost’ remained in what he described as “extreme development.”
Jenkins joined the project in July 2025 after being hired to write the pilot and serve as showrunner if HBO ordered the series. He is best known as the creator of HBO’s comedy series ‘Our Flag Means Death,’ making him an experienced choice to bring Booster Gold’s mix of humor and superhero action to television.
The character has long been a fan favorite in DC Comics. Booster Gold is a time traveler from the future who returns to the present and uses advanced technology to become a famous superhero. Known for his confidence, love of attention, and comedic personality, he often works alongside Blue Beetle and travels with his robotic companion Skeets. Although Booster Gold has appeared in several animated DC projects, he has never led a live-action series.

For now, the future of Booster Gold in James Gunn’s DC Universe remains uncertain. While the character could still appear in another project someday, the standalone HBO series announced as part of the DCU’s original slate appears to have reached its end before cameras ever started rolling.
