Dcu’s ‘Booster Gold’ Is Still Happening, but There’s a Major Twist

Superhero television has had a rough stretch lately, with streaming platforms increasingly willing to pull the plug on projects that once looked like safe bets. This week alone delivered two separate gut-punches for comic book fans within a matter of hours, leaving people wondering just how much more shuffling the genre’s television slate can absorb.

That anxiety reached DC’s corner of the internet almost immediately after Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man’ got canceled despite already being renewed for a second season. Fans barely had time to process that news before word started spreading that DC’s long-gestating ‘Booster Gold’ series was facing a similarly abrupt ending.

The panic started with showrunner David Jenkins himself, who confirmed on Threads that his version of the project would not be moving forward, directly referencing Mahershala Ali’s recent comments about exiting Marvel’s ‘Blade’ by saying he couldn’t improve on that statement and would simply apply it to his own situation. The timing made the news feel like part of a broader pattern of superhero shows quietly getting shelved across both major studios.

Within hours, though, the story shifted in a notably more hopeful direction. According to TheWrap, the ‘Booster Gold’ series is still moving forward at DC Studios with an entirely new creative team, even though an actor has not yet been cast in the title role.

Jenkins had been developing the project since being hired in July 2025, and had only just turned in his completed pilot script in mid-June, calling it one of his favorite pieces of work at the time. Six weeks later, he was off the project entirely, a turnaround that underscores just how tightly DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn continues to control the greenlighting process for every script that crosses his desk.

That level of scrutiny isn’t new for the studio. Gunn has said publicly that no DC Studios project moves forward until he’s completely satisfied with the screenplay, a standard that’s already claimed other DCU television and film projects in various stages of development, including ‘The Authority’ and ‘Sgt. Rock.’

‘Booster Gold’ has had its own bumpy path to this point regardless of Jenkins’ involvement. Early development drafts of the project were reportedly explored with filmmaker Danny McBride before Jenkins eventually took over writing and showrunning duties, meaning this marks at least the second major creative pivot in the show’s history.

The character himself remains a fitting fit for DC’s current tone, built around Michael Jon Carter, a disgraced 25th-century athlete who steals futuristic technology to travel back in time and pose as a beloved superhero. Gunn has previously described the concept as essentially “imposter syndrome as a superhero,” a satirical premise that’s kept the project on the studio’s radar even through repeated behind-the-scenes turnover.

With HBO Max still committed to the concept and a search now underway for a new writer to lead it, ‘Booster Gold’ joins projects like ‘Paradise Lost’ and the upcoming ‘Lanterns’ as part of DC’s ongoing television slate, even if this particular hero is still waiting for someone to actually build him a suit.
