Denis Villeneuve Opens up About His Top Christopher Nolan Movie Picks
Denis Villeneuve has earned a reputation for creating films that are both epic and deeply thoughtful. Starting with tense, intimate thrillers like Prisoners and Enemy, he gradually moved into big-budget science fiction, making hits like Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, and the massive Dune adaptations.
His films often feature breathtaking cinematography from artists like Roger Deakins and Greig Fraser, giving them a distinctive, immersive style that appeals to dedicated film fans. Villeneuve has often expressed admiration for Christopher Nolan, another director known for combining complex storytelling with large-scale cinematic spectacle.
In an IndieWire interview, Villeneuve called Nolan “a very impressive filmmaker who manages to maintain his identity while creating his own universe on a massive scale.” He praised Nolan for making films that challenge audiences intellectually while still feeling thrilling and epic.
Over the years, Villeneuve has shared which Nolan movies he admires most. For a long time, Inception held the top spot in his personal rankings, but after seeing Dunkirk in 2017, he praised it for its intense, immersive war storytelling.
More recently, Villeneuve has highlighted Tenet, calling it “an incredible cinematic achievement and a total masterpiece” on the Reelblend podcast. He explained that the film’s technical complexity blew him away and that it’s designed for the largest screens, not home viewing.
The two directors also respect each other professionally. Nolan has spoken about his admiration for Villeneuve’s Dune saga, while Villeneuve continues to watch Nolan push cinematic boundaries with each new release.
Both are currently busy with major projects. Villeneuve is finishing post-production on Dune: Part Three, set to release on December 18, with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson returning. Meanwhile, Nolan is filming a secret adaptation of The Odyssey, scheduled for July 17, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway.
Villeneuve’s comments show how much he values directors who take risks and craft films that are both visually stunning and intellectually engaging. He said he enjoys seeing filmmakers challenge themselves and their audiences, noting that few directors today can combine large-scale spectacle with deep ideas as successfully as Nolan.
Both Villeneuve and Nolan continue to define modern cinema, proving that blockbuster filmmaking can also be thoughtful and artistically daring. Villeneuve remains inspired by Nolan’s work while developing his own ambitious stories, a combination that keeps movie lovers all around the world eagerly watching each new release.
