Denzel Washington Opens up About His Most Important Role
Denzel Washington has played many powerful characters over the years, but one role stands out as the one that meant the most to him. That role came in the 2017 film Roman J. Israel, Esq., where he played a passionate defense lawyer who lives on the autism spectrum.
The performance required restraint, care, and deep emotional focus, and Washington has said it changed how he sees his work. Speaking in a 2017 interview with The Inquirer, Washington opened up about how his mindset shifted as he got older.
He explained that reaching his sixties made him more aware of time and purpose. “This ain’t a dress rehearsal,” he said, making it clear that he wants every role to matter. For him, Roman was not just another job. It was a chance to fully use his skills while telling a story that felt real and human.
The role was shaped closely around Washington himself. Director Dan Gilroy spent about eight months rewriting the script with him in mind. The two finally met for a long lunch in New York that lasted several hours. During that meeting, they connected over the character and his inner struggles.
Gilroy later said he had wanted to work with Washington for years, and Roman was the role that made it possible. Washington found inspiration for the character in people he already knew. He mentioned drawing from the son of a close friend and said that “we all know people like Roman.” What interested him most was the contrast in the character.
Roman is extremely smart and has a near-perfect memory for books and legal theory, but he struggles when it comes to understanding people and social cues. When the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, the response to the movie itself was mixed.
Still, nearly every critic agreed on one thing. Washington’s performance was exceptional. That work earned him an Academy Award nomination, even as the film sparked debate. For Washington, the praise mattered less than the experience of playing someone so layered and vulnerable.
Today, Washington shows no signs of slowing down. As of February, he is coming off one of the biggest years of his career. His role as Macrinus in Gladiator II brought him renewed attention and a Golden Globe nomination. Critics praised his sharp, dangerous energy and said he gave the film an edge it needed.
He also has several projects either finished or on the way. He recently wrapped work on the Netflix thriller Here Comes the Flood and continues to receive strong reviews for Highest 2 Lowest, his fifth collaboration with Spike Lee. The film is a modern take on a classic crime story and has already become an awards-season favorite.
There are also rumors about future roles, including a possible appearance in Black Panther 3 and a historical biopic about Hannibal, directed by Antoine Fuqua. Washington has not confirmed any details, but interest remains high.
