Denzel Washington is best known for his intense acting roles, but his work behind the camera has quietly become an important part of his career. His directing path started more than twenty years ago with Antwone Fisher in 2002. In that film, he did double duty by directing the project while also appearing on screen as a psychiatrist.

That experience opened the door to more directing work. Over the years, Washington has directed several more films, showing that he enjoys shaping stories from the sidelines just as much as performing in front of the camera. While promoting The Great Debaters in 2007, he explained why directing matters so much to him.

In an interview with Reader’s Digest, Washington said that the biggest reward is watching other people grow. He shared that helping younger actors succeed and passing on what he has learned gives him real joy. For him, directing is not about control or status. It is about teamwork and helping others shine.

During that same conversation, Washington revealed who he looks up to when thinking about his own future. He openly called Clint Eastwood my hero. Washington said he deeply respects how Eastwood slowly moved from acting to directing without ever losing his voice or purpose.

Eastwood’s career path left a strong impression on him. After becoming a star through westerns like Rawhide and the Dollars Trilogy, Eastwood directed his first movie, Play Misty For Me, in 1971.

He often acted in his own films while directing them, later delivering classics like Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby. Washington sees that balance as something worth striving for.

Now, Washington seems to be following a similar road. He continues to act, but he also chooses projects that let him lead, guide, and support others. His focus appears to be shifting toward legacy rather than spotlight.

As of early this year, Washington remains extremely busy. He recently appeared in Highest 2 Lowest, a crime thriller directed by Spike Lee. The movie is an English-language remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low and stars Jeffrey Wright and A$AP Rocky alongside him.

He is also lined up for several major projects. One of them is the Netflix heist film Here Comes the Flood, which features Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Danai Gurira. Another is a large-scale historical film about Hannibal, directed by Antoine Fuqua. The project is being described as a massive epic and will reunite the two after several past collaborations.

On top of that, Washington is expected to return for more Equalizer films, with early reports suggesting a fourth installment could arrive in the coming years. Even with all these acting roles, his comments make it clear that directing and mentoring are becoming just as important to him.
