Dev Patel Allegedly Declined the Role of Sentry in Thunderbolts

If there’s one upcoming MCU project that has been talked about in recent times, it’s ‘Thunderbolts.’ In September Kevin Feige announced that David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, and Olga Kurylenko would be reprising their roles as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Ava Starr/Ghost, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, John Walker/U.S. Agent, and Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, respectively, in the film. He also confirmed that Yelena Belova would be a part of the Thunderbolts team in the film.

Now, the cast of the upcoming movie was the most talked-about aspect of the movie. Initially, Steven Yeun was cast to play Sentry in the movie, and the confirmation followed soon. Fans were not exactly ecstatic with that casting choice, citing obvious differences in how Steven Yeun looks and how comics accurate Sentry is supposed to look; even with a muscle suit and heavy use of CGI, it’s far-fetched at best and laughable at worst. Then, Yeun dropped out altogether, citing scheduling issues that followed soon after the resolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike that paralyzed the whole industry for more than 3 months.

Now it’s obvious that the studio is at this moment looking for new Bob Reynolds, and according to recent reports, Austin Abrams has been offered the role. Soon after the news with Abrams leaked, another name was thrown in the bunch, that of Dev Patel, who, according to those same rumors, declined the role of ‘Sentry.’

Dev gained widespread recognition for his breakthrough role as Jamal Malik in the critically acclaimed film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ (2008), directed by Danny Boyle. Patel received several awards and nominations for his performance in the film, including a BAFTA Award for Best Actor. It looks like Patel wasn’t interested in adding ‘Thunderbolts’ to his resume. The rumors came from notable leaker and scooper on X CanWeGetSomeToast following the “news” of Abrams being offered the role of Sentry.

The funny thing is, as soon as Patel’s name was mentioned in the context of the MCU, fans couldn’t help but point out that he would be perfect for the role of Reed Richards, begging Feige to reconsider the Pedro Pascal casting, which received mixed reception at best.
