Disney Confirms Demi Lovato Is Officially Back as Mitchie Torres in ‘Camp Rock 3′

Nostalgia has been running high for Disney Channel fans this year, with beloved franchises from the 2000s making their way back to screens one after another. Few properties carry as much sentimental weight as ‘Camp Rock,’ the musical series that turned its young stars into household names and dominated cable ratings during its original run.

That wave of nostalgia has been building steadily since ‘Camp Rock 3’ was first announced, with fans eagerly tracking every scrap of casting news as filming got underway last year. Speculation about whether the franchise’s original leading lady would make an appearance has followed the project from the very beginning.

That speculation is officially over. Disney confirmed that Demi Lovato will reprise her role as Mitchie Torres in ‘Camp Rock 3,’ returning to the character that first launched her into stardom, alongside a first-look photo showing her back in the world of the beloved music camp.

Lovato’s involvement goes beyond a simple cameo appearance. In addition to appearing on screen as Mitchie, she’s also serving as an executive producer on the project, joining fellow original cast members Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, and Kevin Jonas, who return as Shane, Nate, and Jason Gray, respectively, in the same producing capacity.

Interestingly, Lovato’s on-screen return wasn’t part of the film’s original announcement. When ‘Camp Rock 3’ was first revealed, Disney Branded Television confirmed the original cast, including Lovato, as co-executive producers, but her appearance as Mitchie had remained deliberately unconfirmed until now, fueling months of fan speculation after she was spotted visiting the set during filming last fall.

Maria Canals-Barrera also returns to the franchise as Connie, who now serves as the camp’s director rather than its cook, marking a shift in her character’s role since the earlier films. Her return, along with the Jonas Brothers and now Lovato, means all five of the franchise’s original stars are back for this installment.

The film introduces a new generation of campers as well, including Liamani Segura as Sage, Malachi Barton as Fletch, Lumi Pollack as Rosie, Sherry Cola as Lark, Hudson Stone as Desi, Casey Trotter as Cliff, Brooklynn Pitts as Callie, and Ava Jean as Madison. According to Disney’s official synopsis, the story kicks off when Connect 3 loses their opening act ahead of a major reunion tour, prompting the band to return to Camp Rock in search of the next big musical talent.

‘Camp Rock 3’ is directed by Veronica Rodriguez from a script by Eydie Faye, with choreography from Jamal Sims. The film marks the franchise’s first new installment in 16 years, following the original ‘Camp Rock’ in 2008 and its sequel, ‘Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,’ in 2010, both of which ranked among the most-watched Disney Channel Original Movies of their respective release years.

Between the two earlier films, the franchise has racked up more than 535 million hours of combined viewership across linear television and streaming, a testament to just how enduring its fanbase has remained over the years. That kind of staying power likely played a role in Disney’s decision to bring back as many original cast members as possible for this revival.

‘Camp Rock 3’ premieres on Disney Channel on August 13 at 8:00 p.m. EDT/PDT, with the film becoming available to stream on Disney+ the following day.
