The final trailer for Toy Story 5 has officially been released, giving fans a new look at Pixar’s next big animated sequel before it arrives in theaters on June 19.

The movie continues the story after the events of Toy Story 4, where Woody decided to leave Bonnie’s room and stay with Bo Peep to help lost toys find new owners. This time, the focus shifts more heavily toward Jessie and Buzz Lightyear, who are now leading the toys inside Bonnie’s room. However, things begin to change when Bonnie becomes attached to a new favorite object called Lilypad, a frog-shaped tablet device that pulls her attention away from traditional toys.

Pixar is using the new film to explore how children interact with technology today. According to comments shared by the filmmakers, Toy Story 5 focuses on the growing role of screens and digital entertainment in childhood. Director Andrew Stanton explained that the movie looks at a difficult reality for the toys. He described it as β€œa realisation of an existential problem: that nobody’s really playing with toys anymore.”

The story places the classic Toy Story characters in a situation where they feel increasingly forgotten as technology takes over playtime. Jessie even admits in the film that she feels like they are β€œlosing Bonnie to this device.” This emotional conflict becomes one of the movie’s main themes as the toys struggle to stay important in Bonnie’s life.

The cast includes many returning voices from earlier films. Tom Hanks returns as Woody, while Tim Allen once again voices Buzz Lightyear. Joan Cusack returns as Jessie, along with Tony Hale as Forky, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, Wallace Shawn as Rex, John Ratzenberger as Hamm, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog, and Kristen Schaal as Trixie. Keanu Reeves also returns as Duke Caboom.

Several new cast members are joining the franchise as well. Greta Lee voices Lilypad, the tablet-like toy that becomes Bonnie’s new obsession. Conan O’Brien joins the movie as a new character named Smarty Pants, while Craig Robinson voices Atlas, a talking GPS hippo toy. Other additions include Mykal-Michelle Harris, Matty Matheson, Ernie Hudson, Alan Cumming, and Wyatt Russell.

Development on the film officially began after Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed in 2023 that another Toy Story movie was in active production. Even though Toy Story 4 was originally presented as a possible ending for the series, Pixar eventually decided to continue the franchise with a new direction. This movie is also notable because it is the first main Toy Story film made without direct involvement from franchise co-creator John Lasseter, who left Pixar in 2018.

Andrew Stanton, who worked on previous Toy Story films and directed movies like Finding Nemo and WALL-E, is directing the project. The screenplay was written by Stanton and Kenna Harris. Pixar veteran Randy Newman also returned to compose the music for the film.

The final trailer highlights emotional moments, comedy, and the growing tension between old-fashioned toys and modern technology. It also hints at larger adventures involving multiple Buzz Lightyear units and new characters entering Bonnie’s world.

With the release date now close, Toy Story 5 is shaping up to be one of Pixar’s biggest theatrical releases in years as the studio brings Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang back for another emotional story.
