Disney Finally Gives Jack Kirby the Tribute Marvel Fans Have Wanted for Years

Marvel’s cinematic universe owes its existence to decades of comic book artistry that rarely gets its due in the theme park spotlight. While characters born from those original pages have become billion-dollar franchises, the creators behind them have often remained an afterthought in how that legacy gets celebrated.

That’s slowly starting to change. Disney has spent recent years finding new ways to honor the architects of Marvel’s comic book foundation, building physical tributes into the very theme park lands inspired by their creations.

The latest of those tributes just landed at Avengers Campus inside Disney California Adventure, where a new plaque dedicated to legendary artist Jack Kirby has officially been unveiled. The plaque reads, “Avengers Campus owes much to your vision and storytelling,” continuing with a message directly addressing Kirby: “The characters you created populate this campus as a living tribute to you, Jack.”

The dedication ceremony took place on August 28, deliberately timed to coincide with what would have been Kirby’s 109th birthday. The event featured remarks from members of Kirby’s family, including his grandson Jeremy Kirby and granddaughter Jillian Kirby, alongside Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Stephen Wacker and other creative figures who helped shape Avengers Campus.

Kirby’s fingerprints are all over nearly every corner of the land now honoring him. Known widely as “The King” within comics circles, he co-created a staggering number of Marvel’s most enduring characters, including Captain America, Iron Man, Ant-Man, the Hulk, and the Fantastic Four, alongside countless others that shaped the visual language of superhero storytelling for generations.

The plaque itself carries a quote directly from Kirby, reflecting his own philosophy on the art of character creation: “If you look at my characters, you will find me. No matter what kind of character you create or assume, a little of yourself must remain there.” That sentiment feels especially fitting given how personal and expressive his artistic style became known to be throughout his decades-long career.

Fittingly, The Thing joined the ceremony to help honor the man responsible for bringing him to life on the page, a nod to Kirby’s deep connection to the Fantastic Four specifically. The new tribute now sits alongside a similar plaque dedicated to Stan Lee, which was installed at the entrance to Avengers Campus back in February 2022.

Kirby’s story within the comics industry has long included a complicated fight for recognition. Despite co-creating so many of Marvel’s cornerstone characters, it wasn’t until 2014 that Marvel and Kirby’s estate reached a settlement addressing credit and compensation for his contributions, a reminder of how long it took the industry to properly acknowledge his role.

Disney had already named Kirby a Disney Legend posthumously back at D23 Expo in 2017, but this latest plaque represents a more permanent, physical presence within the very space his creations helped inspire. For longtime fans who’ve followed the often uneven history of artist recognition in comics, seeing Kirby memorialized directly alongside Lee carries significant symbolic weight.

Born Jacob Kurtzberg in 1917, Kirby’s influence extended far beyond Marvel, having also helped shape major DC properties before his passing in 1994. With this new tribute now standing at Avengers Campus, his legacy has found a permanent home among the very characters that continue carrying his creative spirit forward.
